The NRA’s A-rated West Virginia Senator called for a ban on assault weapons on Monday’s Morning Joe, following the tragic shootings in Newtown, Conn.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., called for a bipartisan conversation on reforming gun laws.

“Anyone saying they don’t want to talk and sit down and have that type of discussion is wrong.”

5. Nah

Maybe in the short run but they'll lose the war.

Defectors are not likely to win NRA support and contrary to the impression you have given, they are unlikely to thank him.

2. What? Now that he's saying something we like . . .

all of a sudden he's credible? Couldn't stand Manchin before, can't stand him now. He's just an opportunist, and I wonder what his angle is now.

9. I think that's changing.

I think a lot of the political supporters are going to suddenly see themselves as standing out in the thunderstorm of public outrage with lightning rods in their hands. One way or the other, they won't be out there long.

7. THIS is courage: do the right thing, even if some people will hate and want to punish you for it.
