(Gov R-NE) Heineman: Too early to talk gun control

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Paul Hammel

LINCOLN — Gov. Dave Heineman, whose wife, Sally Ganem, is a former elementary school principal, said Monday that he spent the weekend talking with his wife about the massacre at a Newtown, Conn., school.

But answers to stop another similar tragedy were elusive, he said.

“This is just an evil tragedy,” Heineman said in a conference call with reporters. “It’s unthinkable, it’s unspeakable.”

When asked about gun control, the Republican governor said “all the facts” need to be gathered first.

FULL story at link.

10. Okay, let's collect the facts...

1. The victims were shot multiple times by a gun.

2. The gun was a high-capacity, high frequency weapon.

3. The gun was legally purchased.

Have I left anything out?

12. Facts? Baloney. The time to address the gun problem has long since passed.

Act now, before another one of these horrible incidents occur.
To those in power to make decisions regarding guns, wake up.
We need no guns. They do not get us jobs, do not fed our families, do not pay our taxes. All they do is kill---either us or the wonderful animals that share our land.
I've had it with any sympathy for anyone who holds firearms. 2nd amendment be damned. Right to carry arms does not mean right to kill. We are long past the point of needing guns to do whatever the founding fathers thought was appropriate at the time.

Confiscate now!

13. And then another tragedy will occur pushing back the date to have a conversation even further

based upon this "logic."

I call BS. How much time is needed to "gather all the facts" when there are score of other recent massacres in which the facts have been gathered?

14. President Obama, if by any chance you're reading this,

I'd like you to John Howard on these fools asses. In the sense of what former PM John Howard did in the wake of the Port Arthur Massacre.

I own a shotgun, to be totally honest. I'm a bird hunter. It's more than adequate for home defense, though here that's really not a problem, to be blunt.

Do I need an AK-47? No. What for? Deer hunting? LOL!

I'm quite proficient with firearms, and edged weapons as well. I've been target shooting since I was a kid, and I've got 15 years of kendo training as well.

If any armchair commandos or would-be "Wolverines!" out there really think they're going to take on the full might, the full arsenal of the US military in some outlandish "resistance to tyranny" scenario, all I can say is don't make me laugh. Your Bushmaster .223 isn't going to do shit against a 9-megaton thermonuclear weapon. Your Glock 17 is no much for a Predator drone armed with Hellfire missiles three miles out at 5,000 feet. Hell, they'll wait until you're dropping a deuce while reading The Turner Diaries on the throne before putting some hardcore smack-down on your "patriotic" ass. If you really honestly believe that you can defeat the US military, the most heavily-armed military juggernaut in all of human history, you're deluded.

If you need anything more than a 12-gauge shotgun, a .30-06 bolt-action rifle for larger game, or if you're uber-paranoid about self-defense, a .45 ACP, (and I'll concede a .22 long-rifle is useful for small game) your problem isn't your fear of President Obama, the Scary Black Man, and federal tyranny. Your problem is that you have a small winkie and you're clearly overcompensating.

You do not need military firepower. Simply because you would not win.

22. People own these guns so they can massacre local law enforcement if they come knocking with an

arrest or search warrant, or do anything else the gun nut doesn't approve of. They also have them so they can kill folks like government safety inspectors or other officials. Oh, and any neighbors, friends, acquaintances or strangers who do anything at all to piss them off. They see guns as the only appropriate method of settling any dispute, no matter how trivial, and no matter if they, the gun nut, are in the wrong.

They use lots of words like tyranny and rights and evil, but the truth is, they simply weren't taught or didn't absorb the basic childhood lesson that YOU DON'T HIT FIRST. And they think they are exempt from all laws they don't like.

19. The fuck it is. The time to talk about gun control is NOW.

I bet the next massacre would happen somewhere in Nebraska, Governor. It's way past time to put aside the pro-2A 'tude and knock heads for gun control legislation.

I'd start with limited clips that one may carry - up to 3 10 round magazine. Anything high capacity ought to be illegal and anyone caught would have their gun license revoked and spend 5 to 10 years in prison.

Also, tax each ammo nearly to 95% and each ammo has to be imprinted. Think LawGiver.

That reminds me - need to check if the new version of JD is out on DVD.

27. Too soon to discuss it means

1. I believe Americans have the attention span of a flea with diarrhea. If we wait a bit, they'll be on to the next shiny thing and leave guns ALOOONNNEEE!!!!

2. If people enact laws while they are clearly focused on a tragedy like this one, the laws will be way too stringent.

3. At a time like this, even I am reluctant to drag out my usual pro-gun memes and, even if I did, they would ring too hollow.

No easy answers. "Too early to tell," maybe? How's about "clueless"? Maybe the NRA hasn't give the go ahead for anyone to talk yet? Is this what the other no-brain Republicons' are saying today, or are they all laying low still? His wife is a Stepford wife....talked her down probably because she was thinking like every other teacher in the USA since Friday. Is the NRA one of his campaign funders?

I guess the republican's answer of when to talk about gun control is never. Profit before people, and a twenty children dead is a small price to pay for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that gun manufacturers will make because now even more cowards will go out and buy more guns.
