Richard Engel is Missing in Syria; NBC News Enforces News Blackout

Source: Gawker

NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel has gone missing in Syria, according to Turkish news reports. The reports also say that Aziz Akyavaş, a Turkish journalist working with Engel, is unaccounted for. NBC News has been successfully keeping Engel's status subject to a news blackout—one to which Gawker agreed until now—for at least the past 24 hours.

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet is reporting that Engel and Akyavaş were last known to be in Syria and haven't been in contact with NBC News since Thursday morning. The news has been reported widely in the Turkish press over the past 24 hours, including by Turkish news channel NTV, which presents itself as an international partner of MSNBC. It's also been widely distributed on Twitter.

But NBC News has been asking every reporter who inquires about the report to participate in a news blackout. It has also taken to Twitter and asked people who repeated the Turkish reports there to take them down. You can see here a screengrab of the Twitter account @NBCComm asking a Twitter user who had mentioned the reports to urgently call a cell phone number (that account has since been taken down).

NBC News declined to comment for the record about Engel's whereabouts, but asked Gawker not to report what it characterized as "rumors" about Engel's current status.

Think he new it would get him one day. Just that he knows the language. Every time he goes to these area's I keep thinking someones gonna nail him.. although in an area like that. and he's not in contact. it's probably a bomb. not a kidnapping

104. I think he's alive

Remember when Marie Colvin was killed the world knew within hours. Same thing with Tim Hetherington in Libya. If the Syrian regular army has him, well, I don't think they would murder a Western journalist outright. They might hurt him. I don't know about the Turkish guy, he might be in more jeopardy. If they did take them they would probably want to scare the shit out of them so they wouldn't try to come back into Syria to tell the world what is happening there, and it would no doubt succeed because his employers would NOT send him back if they get him back in one piece. Richard's a pretty smart guy and he can take care of himself. There could be a very good reason he has his head down. I talked to my husband about this all evening, how much I liked this guy and how worried I was about him. I hope we know where he is by tomorrow.

72. That's true

No one twists the arms of war correspondents to go to these combat zones. They know the danger. And the more times they go the more likely it is they will get captured or killed. I really like him and I very much hope he is only in hiding or getting the hell out. He has been there quite a long time and has no doubt attracted a great deal of attention to himself from the Syrian thugs running that country.

8. So you'ld rather not know what's going on?

Going into a war zone is the only way to find out what's happening in the War (unless you propose to rely on propaganda from either side), and many a reporter volunteers to go.

75. Michael Ware developed PTSD and was forced to retire.

He really was, as CNN used to say, "The Incomparable Michael Ware."

Richard Engel is as good, but I miss Michael.

I hope that he has found something to do with his many talents, and that he has or will have his PTSD symptoms ameliorated.

IMHO, his drinking was a way to cope with the trauma that brought on the PTSD.

47. 54 War Correspondents KIA in WW2

70 KIA first half of 2012.

I was watching a documentary over the weekend (can't recall the name right now but it was about war photographers) and I think they said that 900 journalists have been KIA since WW2. It also talked about how journalists used to be off-limits but now, in many cases, are now specifically targeted. Apparently that is the case in Syria.

I hope Engel is working on a story and that he is safe. He is needed.

He speaks some of the languages over there and is usually well received for doing so.

Nothing on Twitter, either, since anything's been taken down. I follow Richard Engel, but nothing from him for more than 10 days and that was from Egypt...

if NBC convinces her it's in Engel's interest, that it will help the negotiations.

That he is underground, and looking for an escape plan. Or maybe is traveling now on his escape plan.

Stay safe, Richard, please. My heart breaks thinking of the worse.

Peace.

Actually, I checked for tweets from Rachel first, since I follow them both. NBC can take down tweets, but they can't muzzle her and she's the most popular on air host they have...

If Rachel hasn't said something about it, then, clearly they want to keep it quiet for a reason.

80. I'm confused

I'm hearing his last communication was from Egypt but they say he's missing inside Syria. Did he go missing heading back to Syria? Five days, if this is true it is not very good. I really hope someone is hiding him and he's alright but incommunicado.

99. I remember when he reported from the roof of the Baghdad Palestine Hotel, in the early days...

...of Bush's Iraq invasion. That rooftop camera was on 24/7 and I believe other reporters may have used it, as well. Anyway, he'd get in front of the camera, in advance of his official broadcasts, and he'd talk about things like how little sleep he'd gotten or how long it had been since he'd been able to shower and wash his hair. It was just routine stuff--ramblings, really--but it conveyed a sense of what a great person he is and how he's so dedicated to his profession.

I hope with all of my heart that he turns up unharmed.
