NEWPORT BEACH -- A suspect was taken into custody Saturday after shots were fired at a Southern California shopping center, forcing a lockdown of stores, police said.

No injuries were reported but the gunfire and the lockdown caused alarm, coming just a day after a gunman killed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school, and days after a deadly mall shooting in Oregon.

The shots on Saturday were fired in the vicinity of a Macy's department store at the open-air Fashion Island mall in Orange County, police Sgt. William Depweg said.

The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday evening that Kathy Lowe, a spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department, said the shots around 4:30 p.m. were fired in the parking lot near Macy's.

Guns arent the problem, no. The daily mass shooting is a sign we need more guns.

2. I don't think anyone knows the answer to that question.

We've said enough is enough too many times over the past several years.

3. Well those crazies are out to

make the argument in favor of serious gun restriction aren't they? There was a shooting at a hospital in Alabama this morning too. Priming the pen for signing the Bill for sure.

It's becoming quite obvious that there is no alternative... and all those end-of-the-world folks will be coming out of the walls this week. Glad I am miles from the vast majority of humans and in a relatively safe place for now.

The problem is unbalanced people with easy access to guns and no rationale to know better than to use them. With glorification of violence everywhere you look, it's hard for those with no social skills to have any alternative mindset. A sad statement about our society in general.

5. Irresponsible, negligent gun owners are behind the easy access to guns

by people who should have access. Oh, and also irresponsible, criminally negligent gun sellers.

Time for some personal responsibility and serious consequences for the folks who provide matches and gasoline to arsonists.

7. I see a trend here....

...sort of a problem between the gun lobby and retail business. But the problem has no anecdote. What's going to happen if people stop going shopping? At Christmas time? Online retail soars? Brick and mortar a thing of the past?
