CBS News reports 27 killed by gunman at Connecticut elementary school

Source: Associated Press

NEWTOWN, Conn. - A shooting at a Connecticut elementary school this morning left the gunman and 26 others dead, according to CBS News. The Associated Press only confirms that the shooting left the gunman dead and at least one teacher wounded and sent frightened pupils into the parking lot.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. | Newton School District website

It wasn't clear how many people were injured at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. ABC7 News has reported multiple deaths among students, which has not been confirmed by the Associated Press. . .

I am so frustrated with our slowly-evolving/quickly devolving species. We have to go through so much hardship before we EVEN consider changing our ways. Good thing we're on a planet that is tucked away in an obscure location of the Milky Way Galaxy!

Spilled blood to finally take the guns off the street?

I'm sick about this. Those were kids. Not Republicans or Democrats, they never had a chance to have a say in this world.
As close to innocent as you can be.

How can you justify firearm possession at this point?

We live in miserable times, and people need to attend to those who are reaching out for help. Those who might pose a danger need to get treatment by any means.

46. Yes, and educate the public

We need to better educate the public, in general, of what to look for when someone may be having mental issues. Most people have no inkling. I realize that doing this is not going to completely prevent these horrible occurrences, but it just might nip one in the bud if people knew better when to intervene with family and friends who might need help.

5. Just took my second grade class up to lunch before seeing this.

I cannot imagine how horrible this will be for that school and community. I would never be the same if it happened in my seemingly safe school.

Do we take all of the guns away or do we all arm ourselves to the teeth? Should I be carrying a pistol on my hip while at school? Is that really the solution? Hard not to see this as an either or question any more.

22. We'll never be the same anyway

Something like this - the mind can't even absorb it.

Twenty-seven dead, mostly little kids?

The reason I say you'll never be the same is that I never got over the Chinese Zheng school attack - and guess what - I just googled to give you a link, and there was another today. 23 kids injured at an elementary school in China:
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57559179/china-school-knife-attack-leaves-23-injured/

Is it something in the stars?

This day will forever live in you as a back-of-the-mind worry about your students' safety.

I don't know the answer. It's not just guns. There are increasing numbers of attacks by individuals with other weapons, even fire. It's the mind that has the will to destroy, and I don't think normal people can grasp that mind.

Also the fact that it was the father of one of the children in the class makes any theories about protecting against this sort of thing somewhat problematic. Sure, we could put more police on guard in schools, but that wouldn't stop a parent from a class visit. I don't think expecting teachers to teach and be the local SWAT team is at all realistic.

I don't know what to say and I don't know what to think about something like this. It's too shocking and too immense. The worst school massacre I think ever was in the US in 1927, using bombs and gasoline. 45 dead. Perp was a former school board member, I believe.

WHY????? What happens in the human mind that generates this type of wrath and evil?

The first thing that went through my mind when I read that the father was from NJ and 20 years old was that it was a child support dispute, I'm sorry to say. Obviously not the normal type.

15. No they don't

They are tools. I accept that.

The people that pull the trigger are the ones that kill people. The gun just makes it easier than a Knife.

But,
If a tool is determined to be highly dangerous, then it's use should be heavily regulated and monitored.

It's not as if I can go to the Catepillar store and buy a Wrecking Crane without the proper documentation.
Then I can't deploy the Crane without the proper permits and under the watchful eye of the local authorities.

Guns should be the same way. Privately Owned, but locked away in a public armory that can only be accessed under supervision of authority.

...to hunt and shoot at targets?

The report now is that an entire kindergarten class was killed!!! They weren't rabbits, deer, or targets, and the shooter did NOT have to "protect" himself against those poor little children. This is NOT what the founding fathers intended.

This latest incidence of a gun nut running amok is nothing less than a massacre. This evil genie has been out of the bottle for a long time and will likely never go back in, at least as long as NRA supporting politicians are represented in our legislatures. There do not seem to be any good answers on how to address these atrocities in lieu of gun control. But, how do we do nothing but wring our hands in the face of a really serious problem that politicians refuse to acknowledge.

33. Dear gun advocates: Not EVERYTHING that one disagrees with is a lie or a smear. Some?, yes, but

not ALL that you disagree with is a lie or a smear - ***AND*** - the difference between what is, in fact, a lie/smear, and what is, in fact, an essential point/aspect/factor in whatever it is that one values ought to be significant to the valuer, right?, because, how can one authentically value something that you're either dishonest or ignorant about? Isn't dishonesty or ignorance oppression?

When we value something, that implies somekind of relationship to it doesn't it? Why would we falsely limit the definition of that relationship, unless one is threatened by the truth about something? And, being fear based, threats are a form of slavery, oppression, so how can one actually value for real what one is a slave to? Doesn't admitting the truth about something free one to completely commit to it?

One of my points here has to do with the fact that, to me, the way that we are going about this, just doesn't work, for either side of the gun-ownership question.

Because gun-owners are denying certain truths about un-controlled gun-ownership, their guns are not resulting in their putative motive for owning them in the first place, i.e. safety & protection. If you do NOTHING but defend un-controlled gun ownership, it is MORE likely that when the necessity of using that gun presents itself, your safety is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay after the fact and, kill the miscreant or not, not much will change in the over-all valence of your safety quotient, for (in denying ALL factors but un-controlled gun-ownership) you will indeed be put at risk again and again in other ways that are more or less directly dangerous to you and to one - billions of others, by the same things (writ large) that put you in that dangerous situation in which you found it necessary to use your gun in the first place, forced to use it because you have been ignoring ALL aspects of gun-ownership other than un-controlled ownership.

So, the difference between what is in fact a lie/smear and what is an essential factor SHOULD be much more important than most people are pretending it is, even to those who value un-controlled gun-ownership above ALL else.

(rhetorical "you", of course)

It was okay in the 1776-1900 period.

Now, when the government is equipped with stealth fighters, rapid fire artillery, tanks and predator drones, an M-16 won't protect you.

The paradigm has changed drastically.

Guy plans for years maybe...is armed to the teeth. Has Body armor, every sort of lethal instrument even has a subscription to "Soldier Of Fortune".

Gets to the school and...sees the sign that it's a gun free zone....and says

"Oh what was I thinking...?!!!"

goes home and just shoots mom.

58. federal law prohibits 21 year olds from purchasing pistols.

Connecticut law prohibits possession of "assault weapons" and does not issue handgun permits to anyone less than 21 years if age.

Then there's this from the Connecticut state code:
Sec. 29-34. False statement or information in connection with sale or transfer of pistol or revolver prohibited. Sale or transfer to person under twenty-one years of age prohibited. Temporary transfers. Penalties. (a) No person shall make any false statement or give any false information connected with any purchase, sale, delivery or other transfer of any pistol or revolver. Any person violating any provision of this subsection shall be guilty of a class D felony.

(b) No person shall sell, barter, hire, lend, give, deliver or otherwise transfer to any person under the age of twenty-one years any pistol or revolver, except that a pistol or revolver may be temporarily transferred to any person only for the use by such person in target shooting or on a firing or shooting range, provided such use is otherwise permitted by law and is under the immediate supervision of a person eligible to possess a pistol or revolver. Any person violating any provision of this subsection shall be guilty of a class D felony for which one year of the sentence imposed may not be suspended or reduced by the court.

(c) Any pistol or revolver found in the possession of any person in violation of any provision of this section shall be forfeited.

57. An old Sage once said ... "They who live by the sword, shall die by the sword." And He

wasn't talking just about wars of Conquest and Empire, at a peak in His time around 0-4 AD. It was about the Culture of War in the hearts and minds and fantasies and movies and music videos and the internet and video games and the Big Ones ... War Because We Can ... War to Keep Us Safe ... War to Promote the Peace. Those who "act" out or "produce" this "fantasy", are fabuluosly wealthy. Those who own the literal means and the way to carry out the Reality, are our Elected Rulers.

And BS that kids and their young emotions can "tell" the difference between real and make believe...hogwash. Try putting "X" rated movies out for kids claiming it's sex education and that at some magic age they can "tell" the difference between what goes on in a normal home (healthy sex) and what they are watching (sex for pay). And usually no one even dies.

When will we even begin to acknowledge equally precious children in other countries and cultures. The above referenced Sage is reflected in a treasured children's song, "Red and yellow black and white, they are precious in His Sight...Jesus loves the little children of the world."

Local gun store ... Special Today.

If people had adequate lives, medical, meaning, and love the country and world would be so much better.

Some people should not have guns.

Guns should not be a social fetish in a healthy society.

People with guns kill.

We have far too much military.

We have far too much violence in media and "entertainment".

shall we say, fortunate areas. This was apparently a middle class, white, good family member.

We may not be able to with the "go door to door weapons search" hysteria, as we can do what airports do ... empty your pockets and go through the scanner. Nothing personal...just policy.

It does sound perfectly awful for a kindergarten student/parent.

100. what a bloody sad day for all the children and their families

i think michael moore had it right, canadians hunt, they have guns. but, our media preaches FEAR and hate on the other to the extent that a paper boy is shot, a young man who goes to the wrong house is shot, because of FEAR and distrust. this fear and gun culture is being perpetuated. also, i think when reagan cut funds for mental illness, it also exacerbated the problem.

this isn't the wild west (the indians didn't think it was wild until the europeans came) and these gun nuts aren't wyatt earp nor wild bill. i'm not talking about rational gun ownership, i'm talking about those who think it's "bad ass" to wear a gun everywhere they go, not necessarily for safety but for intimidation.

apparently, this individual was mentally ill-on the news just now they stated he shot his mother before going to the school. such a terrible, terrible tragedy.
