Jimmy Savile accused of 31 rapes as police warn of more child abuse arrests
Source: the guardian
A senior police officer in charge of the Jimmy Savile investigation has warned of more arrests to come as he disclosed that the late BBC presenter had been accused of 31 rapes in seven different areas of the country.
Revealing the scale of the investigation, Commander Peter Spindler said 450 individuals had made allegations against the former BBC celebrity, mostly of sexual assault. It is understood that 139 individuals made allegations against others including celebrities and people in positions of power.
The scoping exercise into the scale and nature of allegations against Savile had been completed, Spindler said, but police activity against other alleged abusers was still continuing.
"Our officers will continue to investigate allegations made against those who potentially can be brought to justice. More arrests nationally will be forthcoming," he said. "Our response should send a clear warning to anyone today now in a position of power and influence who abuse their status to sexually exploit children and young people: victims will be listened to and robust action taken."

Meanwhile, there's controversy over whether former BBC director/now New York Times Company CEO Mark Thompson knew about the allegations.

1. I am going to nominate this as the official creepyest story of the year.
Dont worry Rmoney is still a strong leader for creep of the year, with so many challengers from the teabagger front. And then there is Sandusky. Our sick world needs no further tabulations.Stop the presses. Its too late.

3. The Jimmy Saville allegations have dominated UK news for a couple of months now
I still can't work out how come this stuff never came to light until a year after Jimmy Savile popped his clogs.
There has already been a lot of fallout from this, with more to come no doubt.

4. Many people tried to speak out but weren't believed..
He chose care homes and girls who were not trusted to tell the truth, he abused patients at Broadmoor who were punished if they
said anything, he abused patients that were seriously ill and unable to speak. At hospitals that received funds because he raised them because of his name.. Yet so many that worked with him say he was creepy. There is something wrong when a man is his 60s and 70s keeps bareing his chest for photos....

5. "It's just Jimmy being Jimmy."
The London Review of Books recently had an article detailing a culture of pervs at the BBC dating back to the post-war period. It was just sort of accepted as special people with special tics. Times have changed.
