Ten Thousand Aghast as 'Right to Work' Passes in Michigan

Source: Labor Notes

Jane Slaughter

Union protesters in front of the Michigan Capitol today knocked down an enormous tent erected by Americans for Prosperity, the Koch-brothers-funded group that helped bring right to work to the state. State troopers arriving on horseback were helpless, bringing to mind images of Humpty Dumpty and all the king’s men.

Several dozen protesters were sitting down in the Capitol Rotunda, risking arrest, and more were outside the governor’s office. Three school districts were forced to close schools because so many teachers called off for the day.

Four giant inflatable rats in the 10,000-person crowd were named for prominent Republican politicians and their richest backer.

But despite the anger and the chants, the legislature made it official. Governor Rick “The Nerd” Snyder was expected to sign right-to-work bills tomorrow.

FULL story at link.

2. Snyder won't last long

Any Democrat who promises to repeal "Right to Work" (for almost nothing) on his or her first day in office will win easily. You can't tell me that in a state as unionized as Michigan is, Right to Work (for almost nothing) represents the will of the people.

4. Wow. This should be a wake up call for anybody who thinks this could never happen in their state.

If it could happen in Michigan, it can happen anywhere.

5. Shut it down.

Waving signs and making your opinion known is nice... but the men and women in the capitol are not going to pay attention to you. They're not going to pay attention to you when you say "Ooooo, just you wait until our next election!" because they don't care if they hold office or not; they're rich, and they get to fuck you at a whim either way.

7. Nicely put and oh so true. They don't care! Romney already told us that. Why don't people believe

it? Just wait until they get to cut the food stamps that are going to feed their base. Their base won't even mind as long as they are convinced that some Mexican or black person is also being denied.

24. No, No, NO!!!

according to some here, we're supposed to hold these bastards "accountable" by calling their office every day and telling them what to do/not do. They WILL listen to us and do as they are told.

9. Somehow, I think there is going to be permanent friction between the union workers in MI and

law enforcement. Not a healthy situation. Law enforcement should have stood firmly with the union in this but knowing some of the things that law enforcement stands for and does in other cities around the nation it is not surprising.

In Wisconsin, they stood with the teachers. Not so here.

20. The cops were just

going to work and doing their jobs...today. The thin blue line will break soon enough, and when it does, they may not join the protesters, but they'll stop getting physical with them and start getting physical with their brothers who won't, and that will take place in the locker room and after work. Believe it.

The main thing that makes me angry about this is that Rick Snyder ran on the fact he was against right to work laws and he blatantly lied to the people he serves, oh wait he's a republican not surprising at all.....

16. Snyder specifically stated he was against "right to work" laws

when campaigning? Wow! This should go VIRAL.. as in Never believe RepublCONS running for gov AGAIN!

I keep reading Snyder isn't running again so that would make it another lying plutocrat will be running in 2014.. we just don't know who, yet.

21. I am a lifelong Michigander

And I'm just sick about this. Sick.

But maybe now the national party will pay some attention to us. Michigan has been off the national radar screen for a long time; dismissed as a 'flyover' state or a crumbling symbol of the past. I've seen plenty of union indifference right here on DU, plenty of justification for buying imports with the lame excuse that they were 'made in the US.' Yep, they were. In non-union factories.

All of this weakened organized labor, here in Michigan and elsewhere. So the Koch brothers took advantage of the situation and recruited the squeaky voiced liar who just took us back to the nineteenth century to the astonishment of a lot of people who ignored Michigan for years until today.

I sure hope this is the catalyst for a national movement. Finally.

thanks for bringing (maybe) more $9.00 per hour jobs to Michigan!! You rock, man!

On a more serious note-- I wonder how many of the protestors actually voted for Snyder??

25. Yeah, "right to work". Slaves had a "right to work".

Only "right" they had. And it's the only right we'll have if these puppets and their paymasters have their way.
