Source: CBS - Detroit

School has been canceled in two Michigan school districts as hundreds of teachers are expected to call in sick Tuesday to join right-to-work protests in Lansing.

Taylor Public Schools will be closed down because of the high number of staff that have already called in, apparently to attend the demonstrations. Superintendent Diane Allen told WDIV-TV there won’t be enough teachers to cover classrooms. She said she had heard from a principal about where the teachers were going.

Warren Consolidated Schools will also be closed Tuesday, due to number of teacher absences for the same reason...

1. Wish they'd all close & head to Lansing!

Taylor got hit real bad with pay cut's, something like 20%. Taylor is losing so many teacher's over these cut back's.

7. The exemption might be because cops and firefighters can't strike.

I think they have to go through arbitration, not a picket line.

Or, since Snyder is driven to work by a State Trooper, he might not want to piss them off too much.

18. There's an odd alliance between repugs and some cops and firefighters

They often exempt them from "reform" legislation. I have a cousin who is a cop and die hard repug. He supports chopping public employees with the exception of cops and firefighters, rationalizing they "risk their lives".

I called in sick to attend protests in Madison. Way past time for this disrespect of workers to be stopped.

9. And even worse or evenly worse, they're killing womens' health rights..

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021957638

While the lockout took place, senators passed several extreme measures to limit insurance coverage of abortion care (SB 613 and SB 614) and allow objections to services based on religious beliefs, moral convictions, or ethical principles sincerely held by an individual or entity (SB 975). In addition, the House also snuck in a ban on abortion coverage to the legislation that converts Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan into a nonprofit mutual insurance company.

The following statement can be attributed to Kary L. Moss, ACLU of Michigan executive director:

“While the Senate passed one bad bill after another, they locked out the public, including our legislative director. The halls of our legislature are sacred. Police may keep the peace but they may not keep out dissent. We have a sacred right to peacefully assemble and petition the government, which is the cornerstone of our democracy. Pushing controversial bills through a lame duck session is a bad way to make public policy under the best of circumstances. Doing so on such important issues while the public is shut out of the debate is cause for, once again, the Michigan legislature to be a national embarrassment.”

Proud of the Taylor teachers too ... but, there is always so little to be proud of Warren for (the entire city, not referring to the teachers)
