Syria mixing chemical warfare agents, U.S. official

Source: CNN

Syrian forces began combining chemicals that would be used to make deadly sarin gas for use in weapons to attack rebel and civilian populations, a U.S. official tells CNN.

The United States obtained intelligence over the weekend indicating this development, according to the official who had direct knowledge of the latest information.

The intelligence, the official said, came from multiple sources but declined to provide any more details about how the United states learned of it.

Sarin gas, the source said, could most readily be used to fill artillery shells.

Looks like the shit is about to hit the fan for real.

The significant change here if this report is true is that they are actually preparing the chemicals for immediate use rather than just moving them around.

1. I'm pretty sure there will be an outside response if chemical weapons are used.

2. Baby incubators. Yellow cake. Iraqi mobile bioweapons labs.

You'll pardon me if my bullshit detector goes off a bit, but the U.S. doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to these claims. In fact, we have a long and storied history of just making shit up to suit our needs and goals. It will take more than some anonymous leaks repeating unconfirmed intelligence from unnamed sources before I'll believe a word of it.

4. The difference here is the threat

is to react upon use of the weapons not react upon decision to use the weapons. Shrubbo and company made up a bunch of bullshit and pretended we had to act now or the evil Iraqi's were going to use the bioweapons they never actually had.

It's not hard to prove that nerve gas has been deployed.

5. Your right. And if nerve gas is actually deployed I'll 100% support bombing the shit out of Assad

I just don't want to see another round of unconfirmed reports be spun into a justification for "preemptive strikes".

10. how is it our problem?

Assad has already murdered 40,000 syrians and the "resistance" are islamists who hate our guts. Best thing we could do is just stay the fuck out of it.

13. I believe we should stay out of it, but there are lines.

The wholesale use (and I mean USE, not mere posession or threats, and certainly not unconfirmed reports) of weapons of mass destruction, or acts of genocide, against a civilian population are one of the few things that truly does justify international military intervention. I opposed going to war in Iraq, I opposed going to war in Afghanistan, I opposed bombing Libya, and until now I have opposed AND WILL CONTINUE TO OPPOSE intervening in Syria.

That changes if Assad starts firing nerve gas at population centers. At that point, greater humanitarian interests have to overrule my anti-war instincts.

8. Since rebels have over run bases how are you going to know who did it?

For all we would know it was them doing it with stuff looted from a base they took over.

16. I doubt that.

If the rebels had overrun a base with chemical weapons, you can bet that Assad would have screamed bloody murder about it, and the it would have been in every global headline within hours. Assad has claimed, since day one, that the rebels are actually al Qaeda linked terrorists. If he had the opportunity to also claim that they were terrorists with chemical weapons, there is NO WAY he would avoid doing so.

In all honesty, I'm a bit suprised that Assad hasn't tried that already. If he deliberately allowed the rebels to overrun a base with a small amount of chemical weapons, announced it to the world, and then set off a false-flag in one of his own cities a few days later, global support for the rebellion would cool quickly.

22. Just think of the logistics for that

The rebel threat is still high and you think just viagra will be enough to get me to rape other people. Its was western propaganda to demonize Gaddafi.

Ofc there have been instances where armies raped women in the hundreds or thousands like in Rwanda and WWII Germany, but those usually come after victory not in the middle of it.

3. If this is true and Syria uses gas on its own people, its war

All NATO, as well as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Israel would have reason to destroy Assad and his government completely.

I cannot imagine what rationale would drive even a dictator like Assad to such a blatantly cruel, vicious and internationally despised action. But we'll see what happens.

Obama and the Democrats are war criminals, guilty of collective punishment, murder and genocide.

That's what you are alluding to right?

But you're too chicken shit to say it.

19. If true, it's likely a deadman trigger in case the US and others attempt a preemptive strike.

Please see, Syria Boxed into a Use-'Em-or-Lose-'Em WMD Dilemma Holding a Deadman Trigger , http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021920320

Has nothing to do with rebels. It's Syria's version of a strategic deterrent.

17. Oh no you don't CNN!

You can't release yet another WMD story without any solid attribution.

"The intelligence, the official said, came from multiple sources but declined to provide any more details about how the United states learned of it".

We won't get fooled again, and the release of this fearmongering bullshit is reprehensible.

List some sources!

18. Once again, the source is "A US official..." Nothing to see hear, move along.

I seriously think they sit around and think up these threats,
try to convince us, WITH OUT any real evidence, so they can
bomb the crap out of yet another civilian population.

I don't buy a word of anything that comes from an anonymous US Official.
Who the fuck ARE these officials and why are they never named?

I thought that's what would happen when I voted for Obama and we just turned it down to medium instead of high.
