Japan threatens to shoot down North Korean rocket

Source: ABC Online

Japan is threatening to shoot down a North Korean rocket that Pyongyang says it could launch next week.

Kim Jong-un's regime insists the rocket, which it says will fly south over the Philippines and Australia and into orbit, is carrying a communications satellite.

But the United States, South Korea and Japan all say that the launch is really a ballistic missile test, with North Korea trying to master the technology to fire long-range missiles capable of one day carrying a nuclear warhead.

The last North Korean rocket launch ended in ignominy in April, when the rocket broke up and splashed into the Yellow Sea just a minute or so after take-off.

1. If they are firing it south and it is a dud

It may land here in South Korea which would start a war. I guess I'll be stocking up on food and water

2. Kim Jong Pugsley must be none too pleased about the news.

Expect more repercussions within North Korea than without if Japan spanks the Onion Sexiest Man Alive's space program.

8. Jabba the Kim needs to put away the food and the video games

and grow up.

North Korea has disease, cholera and the worst human rights record in the WORLD. If it were not for their buddy China, they would not have money.

Oh well, the North Korean people must like their system.

12. Not to rain on your parade

But they have to shoot it in the direction of the earths rotation to get additional speed to make it into orbit.

Not that I think it's a communication satellite.

13. Which way is south?

I'm hoping a little miscalculation sends the missile screaming over China. Not that might change the far east dynamic....

15. It could get interesting if japan shoots it down

Which I doubt will happen, seen as these things usually explode 5 minutes after takeoff....

16. Of course, there was the Daepodong rocket that whizzed over northern Japan

and reportedly got close to the Aleutians back in 1998, so there's always the possibility that this next one won't be a dud.

17. Technically speaking, that's simply amazing.

To be able to shoot a high speed missile with another missile! That was impossible just short time ago.

18. It might be if it happened ...

... as opposed to just mouths claiming that it "would" happen.

(Rather like the thought of NK getting a satellite into a stable orbit.)
