Republican Pa. lawmaker announces hes gay

Source: Philly.com

A Republican lawmaker from rural central Pennsylvania, who describes himself as a conservative Christian, made history as the first openly gay member of the state legislature.

Rep. Mike Fleck, 39, of Huntingdon, disclosed that he is gay in an interview with the Huntingdon Daily News that was published Saturday.

Fleck, who recently separated from his wife of almost a decade, told the newspaper that he struggled with his sexuality for years and hopes his openness will help others better understand the journey people have to take to live an authentic life.

"Coming out is hard enough, but doing it in the public eye is definitely something I never anticipated," he said.

1. I would think that having to rub elbows

with people who considered him a faggot and would gladly see all homosexuals burning in hell for all eternity would have been even harder. Why any gay male would associate with the Republican party in any way is a continuing mystery.

3. Maybe he thought that would help him "cure" himself.

(it'd be interesting if he were to provide the names of still-closeted members of the Majority Caucus in the Pennsylvania Assembly...it's doubtful that there aren't any others).

5. IIRC Huntingdon is very very "conservative"

by which I mean, more precisely, that Huntingdon is full of rightwing wackos: in fact, I do believe I remember hearing about a large KKK rally in Huntingdon some years ago

8. I guess this a-hole is okay

with the RW Jebus organizations supporting the Ugandan "Kill the Gays" bill.

Gay and Republican, sorry...you're a useless tool.

No one says you have to be a Democrat if you're gay, but supporting a party whose platform clearly states they are against who you are is beyond sick and idiotic. It say more about you and your mental state than anything. Not fit to govern.

11. Isn't that special?????

So.... money is more important to him than dignity... or even being treated like a 1st class citizen. Being treated like a 2nd class citizen is something he is about to learn a lot about, now that he's not pretending to be straight, and sneaking around with a wife and everything, anymore.

on the other side...like others have said, get out of the Party of Puke and Bagger Haters!

At a minimum, do the correct thing for ALL Americans, including the LGBT community.

is he still even eligible to be a member of the republican party?
I think telling the truth as a republican is a no-no.

18. wow, reading his bio I wanna puke at his past connections

Fleck, who attended Christian schools and graduated from Liberty University, founded by evangelical leader Jerry Falwell, said he spent years in therapy trying to reconcile his homosexuality with his faith.

Before being elected Fleck, a former Eagle Scout, had been employed as a regional director of the Boy Scouts of America, which bars gay youths as members and prohibits gay troop leaders. He said that job contributed to his difficulty in making his sexual identity known.

---

in saying those groups (esp. the Uni) annoy me, I commend him for doing what he's doing, and hope he turns from the social conservatism he has been so connected to.

19. The power of homophobia.

That power is waning, but it is still quite strong, especially for those who are religious. He is going to face some major hate. I can't help but to feel a little bit of sympathy for him. Growing up and being told your feelings are wrong, immoral, and evil is nothing more than mental and emotional torture. "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is one of the biggest lies still being uttered today.

21. Here's Gawker: He's still a Rethug, voting record won't change, against environment &civil liberties

Well, goody on him that he hasn't had to vote so far on his home group's rights, although he has voted against most other groups' rights: voted for voter suppression, voted for broader wiretapping, voted against environment.

The First Openly Gay Pennsylvania Representative Is a Republican Who Hates the Environment

.... Over the course of his career, Fleck has voted eight times against legislation that would help protect the environment. One of the most notable examples was a February 2012 vote that allows counties to choose whether or not to enact a severance tax on companies who extract oil and gas using hydrofracking methods.

Fleck also has voted to limit civil liberties of Pennsylvania voters. In 2012, he supported the loosening of wiretapping laws. He also voted for the enacting of voter ID laws which would require registered voters to show photo identification when they went to the polls. Both of these acts passed and were signed into law. Fortunately, a judge struck down the voter ID laws before last month's election.

He has never had to vote on any same-sex equality laws.

Fleck told the hometown paper, "I don't see anything changing in my life, I don't see my voting pattern changing." Well now that you're publicly part of a group that needs a lot of help from its legislature, you really should take a second glance at some of those privacy and discrimination laws that you vote for.

Why not before the election?

Guess he didn't want to lose any votes from the Santorum wing of his party.
