UT lawmaker seeks to ban abortion based on gender

Source: AP

Women would be prohibited from having abortions based on whether they want a boy or a girl under legislation proposed by a Utah lawmaker.

State Sen. Margaret Dayton told the Deseret News (http://bit.ly/VhEkMb ) that she also is considering preventing women from getting abortions based on the race of a baby.

Planned Parenthood of Utah Executive Director Karrie Galloway opposes the Orem Republican's proposed "Gender Selection Abortion Prohibition" bill.

1. Silly.

Have not heard of any one ever having an abortion on such a trite issue.

Attention seeker. I hope she gets the attention she requires.

13. And what would prevent some women (those that have enough $$$$$) leaving the country

to have the abortion, if they were so determined?

21. You would be surprised

I am an engineer, and I work around plenty of South Asians(Indians, Bangladesh, Pakistanis, etc.). Now first let me say that the overwhelming majority don't support gender motivated abortions...like 99%, but from my conversations with South Asian coworkers/friends, there are clearly some who do. My friend Vivek told me about how he and a fellow Hindu fell out of favor when that friend suggested that they would abort the fetus if the mother tested positive for a girl. He was like "This is America!", but the cultural impacts and extra expenses of raising a Hindu girl anywhere were still relevant...I guess.

I checked with Vivek after reading this post, and asked him about that former friend. They have 2 boys. You can make your own conclusions.

As a Black man, I'm also sensitive to aborting a fetus for racial reasons...which no one on DU can convince me doesn't happen.

This law has nothing to do with denying abortions with reference to rape, health, or parenting timing, just pure unadulturated sexism and racism. Just ONE of these types of abortions is FAR too many. Personally I think that aborting a child for racial or gender reasons is incredibly more silly, but then again I'm not a Hindu(I know that's a broad term) or a White woman in the deep South/Indiana/Utah/Long Island NY/Surburban America.

In addition, I don't trust Utah Repukes with any female health laws...well, ANYTHING for that matter.

22. Sometimes, immigrants bring their practices with them

It's created quite a debate here in Canada. Many doctors are uncomfortable about aborting female fetuses simply because they're female.

9. Correct

including the UK. That was the background to why in certain geographical locations the NHS sonographers would not divulge the sex to the parents regardless of their race. The number of terminations where a seemingly healthy baby was a girl had already become apparent. The parents would've needed a private ultrasound to find out.

10. I'm always surprised by these stories

because I can't figure out how you would find out what a woman's reason for an abortion would be anyway. Its not a question asked, and even if it was, its easy enough to lie. Its basically an unenforceable rule.

15. That's the whole point of a law like this.

You really can't figure out the woman's reason but it would add one more piece of bureaucracy to a time-sensitive situation.

12. This is not something that is even an issue in the United States

Sex-selective abortions are unfortunately common in some parts of the world (and in those places, they are the result of larger structural issues that laws banning them and female infanticide don't properly address) but it is simply not an issue here. I believe this proposed ban, along with the to-be-proposed ban on race-selective abortion, is just part of an anti-choice agenda that has been using increasingly covert means to achieve their desired ends.

Pukes and Baggers...the Party obsessed with a woman's "girly parts and stuff".

What was that? You have NO War on Women?

19. You can only have a legal abortion in the 1st 24 wks, right? There's only a small

window, then, of when a woman can know the gender, and still get legal abortion (18 - 24 wks).

I don't know if gender choosing goes on. Seems like another way to try to restrict abortion, until they make it so you can't get one. Anytime after 18 wks, the state can claim you're gender-choosing, if you've had a sonogram and could tell the gender.

24. Of course having a sonogram isn't proof of anything.

How would they even try to control this: makes it illegal for women who are 18-24 wks pregnant to have a sonogram that identifies the baby's gender? It's easy to suspect that, as a female and former nurse, Margaret Dayton is just a "bill face" for her male colleagues in the majority LDS/Repub Utah senate. They trot her out in the same way Boehner trots out Kathy McMorris Rogers for his backdrop at pressers.
