There's a lot more to this story I suspect. Another account says the guy shot his girlfriend, who later died. This is a sad story to start my day.

5. I am always at a loss to understand these things

I will never understand what drives people to kill a loved one, and to kill themselves. So sad to see this happen anywhere. I mean you have this and almost the same type of incident in, what was it Wyoming??. I just don't understand.

Oh, and the comments on that article, I can't believe how racist some of them are.

Well, I hope all these people rest in peace.

People need to be aware of this and dump these assholes before they kill, which happens far too frequently.

32. An average of three women per day in America die at the hands of a mate (either a spouse or

SO). It only becomes news when it's a pro football player, I guess. But doesn't make it any less tragic, nor any less outrageous, for the non-famous.

7. Facebook pics of Belcher, his girlfriend and new baby

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher this morning shot and killed his girlfriend before going to Arrowhead Stadium and fatally shooting himself as team personnel tried to stop him, police said.

Police Capt. David Lindaman said Belcher, 25, and his girlfriend, 22, got into an argument around 7 a.m. at their home in the 5400 block of Crysler Avenue in Kansas City. Around 7:50 a.m., Lindaman said, Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Lindaman said Belcher’s mother, who was visiting the couple and their 3-month-old daughter, witnessed the shooting and was being interviewed by police.

Belcher left the scene on Crysler and went to the Chiefs practice facility at Arrowhead, police said.

Police were called to the stadium around 8:10 a.m. When Belcher arrived there he encountered General Manager Scott Pioli, Coach Romeo Crennel and other team personnel.

Police said Chiefs staff attempted to keep Belcher from committing additional acts of violence. When police arrived, they heard a gunshot and found that Belcher had shot himself in the head

There is no hell. He's just dead. Piss on his grave, it makes no difference.

Not some stupid words.

Unbelieveable. When you go to NIH and look at statistics, at least as of 2006...men are the #3 cause of death for women in the US. They're the #1 cause of death for pregnant women.

22. Agreed. "Unintentional injury" is listed as the 3rd leading cause of death for women.

But that includes everything from auto wrecks to sporting accidents to bad falls. I didn't see any disaggregation of numbers for homicides.

33. Actually, unintentional injury is number 6

in the most recent statistics at the CDC link.

http://www.cdc.gov/women/lcod/2008/index.htm

Homicide is not listed in the top 10.

I'm wondering if it's a bigger problem then the league would like to admit, and it can lead to things like this.

Not to mention, a culture of entitlement for athletes that begins in high school for some.

IMHO, linebackers give and get 'em a lot more frequently than we are aware.

are far bigger causes for this type of thing than steroids.

Seau kinda went through the same thing, was abusive and later killed himself.

27. Or frontal lobe damage as a result of traumatic brain injury

the effects of repeated concussions in professional football players can cause dramatic personality changes, loss of impulse control, and violent behaviour; there've been other cases of domestic violence and suicide among football players (of course it'd take an autopsy and brain dissection to see if that was the case here).

My only comment to this news is that I offer my most sincere condolences to all of the Kansas City Chiefs Organization and family, friends and fans of those were lost in such a horrible tragedy.

This is a very dark day for all who enjoy sports or just life in general.

My thoughts and prays are with you all.

19. "committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager"

This is one very fucked up story. Between the two victims, a parentless baby and two more who witnessed a suicide

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.
