US condemns Israeli settlement expansion

Source: AFP

WASHINGTON The White House Friday condemned Israel's decision to build 3,000 settler homes in east Jerusalem and the West Bank as "counterproductive" and said it would make resuming peace talks harder.

Israel revealed the plans in response to a historic vote in the UN General Assembly Thursday to recognize Palestine within the 1967 borders as a non-member observer state.

"We reiterate our longstanding opposition to settlements and east Jerusalem construction and announcements. We believe these actions are counterproductive and make it harder to resume direct negotiations or achieve a two-state solution," said National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

"Direct negotiations remain our goal and we encourage all parties to take steps to make that easier to achieve," Vietor said.

3. Well

finally, this is the type of leadership, that I'm looking for from our Government and especially with our Party in charge! We have to be even handed and stick to our principles! Even if it means condeming our Allies when they are wrong!

5. Even handed?

Really...today Senator Schumer was talking about going ahead and not providing any support to the Palestinians, because of the vote in the UN!

And let's not forget AIPAC demanding that the US shut down the PLO office here in the US, even handed my ass!!!

You want even handed...that'll be when the President appears at a press conference and says that until Isarael stops its expansion plans the US will not provide any funding to either side...that's even handed.

But it won't happen...because when it comes to Israel, all this government has are empty words and the Israelis know it...

11. You

made good points and I understand your frustration. I'm still hoping this Administration does the right thing though. They can be a lot more helpful than a hindrance. I do think it is a positive step though even though it is a little one. However, I think the Palestinians made a huge step for themselves though. If Israel does take steps to occupy more land, the U.S. is at least on record now if the Palestinians should go the legal route.

4. Verbal condemnation

Means nothing to Israel, especially coming from America. They insulted the President during the Vice-Presidential visit by announcing the expansion of settlements in Jerusalem. The right wing in Israel believe they are entitled to all of Palestine and the indigenous people don't count, something like the native Americans.

10. Any attempts by the President - any President - to do either of those would immediately

have Congress reverse it by a bipartisan, veto-proof margin.

Congress essentially disarms or neuters every President on this issue....and we all know it.

26. Good point - our no vote on Palestinian statehood was just yesterday, I think

and Israel's response to the UN vote to recognize Palestinian aspirations to peace and recognition is to gobble up more territory?

Which is what keeps driving the Palestinians to stupid desperate attacks against Israel? I don't get the whole mess, and it just seems like there are enough people on both sides dedicated to perpetuating conflict that none of the legitimate solutions can gain any traction.

33. The Oslo Accord B/S was a scam

Bill Clinton made AIPAC hardliners Martin Indyk and Dennis Ross has "peace negotiators" for the I/P conflict. During the "peace process" Israel made the greatest expansion of "settlements" in its history to that point.

In 1982, Martin Indyk began working as a deputy research director for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a pro-Israel lobbying group in Washington.

In the mid-1980s Dennis Ross co-founded with Martin Indyk the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)-sponsored Washington Institute for Near East Policy ("WINEP"). His first WINEP paper called for appointment of a "non-Arabist Special Middle East envoy" who would "not feel guilty about our relationship with Israel."

Bill Clinton thought Dennis Ross' and Martin Indyk's backgrounds and philosophies made them perfect candidates to be his negotiators for the Israel/Palestine conflict. This is consistent with Bill Clinton's governing philosophy, and who he hired to run his administration.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Steiner_(AIPAC)

Bill Clinton put the foxes in charge of the hen-house in the phony "peace process."

I am sure they would like some FA-18’s and some JDAMS and daisy cutters so they can defend themselves.

I look at the whole situation this way what would the USA do if a bunch of Canadians came across the US border built homes and claimed the new homes and land part of Canada, eh?

The USA needs to stop meddling in the Middle East, we have been doing it for over 60 years and it has been nothing but a political failure that has gotten thousands of Americans killed here and in the ME while at the same time only enriching the coffers of the oil barons.

Israel is a fully capable of taking care of themselves and if they cease to exist then it must be God’s or Allah’s will, take yer pick.

43. Enough

We give Israeli billions every year and they give us the finger. It is clear to anyone with eyes that the Israelis have no intention of negotiating for peace. Anytime there is an apparent move in the direction of peace, they take actions like this one--designed to anger Arabs enough that talks become a moot issue. I challenge anyone to take a look at a map of Israel as it develops over five year intervals from 1948. No matter what they say, every five years Israel grows and potential Palestine shrinks. Sadly, (I lived in the middle east) the truth is that middle eastern Christians, Jews, and Muslims all share one trait--they view negotiations as a contest in which there is a "winner" and a "loser." Whether it is in the souk over a trinket or for world peace, no side seriously looks for compromise, only "victory." It's time to recognize reality and simply cut off funds to Israel. As long as they have American muscle on their side, nothing will change except the slow absorption of Arab territory while Israel sheds crocodile tears over "lost" peace initiative. A pox on all their houses. Let's leave them alone to stew in their own pot. If it wasn't for the Christian Fundamentalist pro-Israeli faction, the American Neo-Cons who view Israel as an extension of the American Empire, and the Israeli lobby that has a stranglehold on Florida, we would have cut them loose years ago. If, as FDR said, "The United States has no friends, only interests," it is no longer in our interest to give unconditional support to Israel.
