Israel to build 3,000 settler homes after UN vote

Source: BBC News

Israel has authorised the construction of 3,000 more housing units in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, according to Israeli officials.

It is also speeding up the processing of 1,000 planning permissions.

The Palestinian Authority has said it will not return to peace talks without a freeze in settlement building.

UN vote gives Palestinians new diplomatic powers

Plenty of attention in the build-up to the vote was centred on a technical question about UN procedures which could have far-reaching political implications - would this upgraded status give the Palestinians access to UN agencies including the International Criminal Court?

If it did, then they would be able in theory to pursue Israel for its settlement policies on the West Bank - widely seen as a clear breach of international law.

Israel rejects that legal interpretation - but it may not be anxious to see the issue tested in court.

72. Thank you. But no.

Germany does not want any leadership as a world power. Except perhaps in shutting down nuclear power and changing to renewable energy. We´ve really had enough of this. We'd prefer to be a partner in Europe, not the leader.

It is a fact that no German politician can publicly call Israel's politics upon the Palestinians what ist is - Apartheid, blatant racism. Because then they will be called a Nazi. We heard this again and again since 1972, when we could not protect the athletes. So we always have to confim that Israel has the right to defend its people, even if Israel started the shooting. Thus the other side does not trust us, too. I think Germany should just shut up in this conflict, we cannot do anything good.
And noone, really nobody in Germany wants to say "I boycott goods from Israel" as we did back then when we refused to buy from the South African apartheid regime. Because that was the beginning of the Holocaust in the 1930ies: "Ich kaufe nicht bei Juden" meaning "I don't buy in shops with jewish owners". We just cannot, we don't want to say that again. Never ever.

the Palestinians counter, and develop the land themselves? Just move in and dare the Israeli Government to forcefully evict them off their own land. Then take it to the International Courts for the U.S. to take a position. Let the U.S. approve of Israel's illegal act. Therefore our Government will have to force its hand. If, we come down on the side of breaking International Law, then we want have a moral issue on any other illegal acts perpetrated by other countries. The U.S. will have to make a decision.

When anti-Jewish sentiment becomes a thing of the past around the world, then there will be peace and Palestine and Israel will get along.

Until then, Israel has to remain vigilant and defend itself against the slightest hostility from its neighbors.

When Hamas fires rockets at Israel they have right to shoot back.

Hamas puts their rockets launchers in civilians areas to ensure civilians die in retaliatory strikes.

But I absolutely agree that the settlements are morally wrong.

Does this now make it okay to harm civilians?
I guess it does in your mind.
Perhaps they could go after the launchers in a different way than with rockets, if they are in civilian areas, in a way that would not harm so many civilians.
I seem to remember an Israeli leader touting that 100 Palestinians would die for every Israeli that they killed though. Don't ask me which one, it was a while ago.

because Jews are suffering from right-wingers in Hungary? The two issues can be addressed in parallel.

That party in Hungary, which was already marginal in their parliament, lost support for that. And now the right wingers in the US and Israel, who were already marginal in the UN, are loosing support for this. Hopefully, soon enough, they will become marginal in their own countries as well.

The government condemned the remarks.

"The government strictly rejects extremist, racist, anti-Semitic voices of any kind and does everything to suppress such voices," the government spokesman's office said.

Laszlo Kover, the Speaker of parliament, who is from the ruling Fidesz party, also issued a statement on Tuesday in which he called for a tightening of house rules that would allow a sanctioning of such behavior.

And the defense of Israel cannot possibly justify settlement expansion. Moving your country's civilians into what is for all practical purposes a war zone is not defense...it's madness.

There's no good reason to ever again expand a single settlement. Anywhere in the West Bank. It serves no good purpose and simply ratchets up the tensions. Why continue a policy that is the living embodiment of the definition of insanity?

they remembered the persecution they encountered in every country in which they settled. I'm thankful that they did survive, and are flourishing today.

Palestinians also will remember, and sometimes I think Israelis lose sight of that, unfortunately. Israelis can militarily do just about whatever they want, but in time, will bad decisions come back to haunt them? Obviously, I don't have a crystal ball, but if you look at the Balkans as a guide, caution is important in that region.

26. I give you my word on my mother's grave

that I am NOT anti-semitic, but I AM anti-Israeli. Giving Palestine "back" to the Jewish people makes as much sense as giving MY house back to the Native Americans makes - tho giving my land and house back to the Native Americans makes MORE sense, as the Native Americans were forced off THEIR land "only" about two hundred years ago...... The entire Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a tragedy, BUT Israelis should AT LEAST abandon ALL their settlements in the land the UN theoretically reserved for Palestinians (tho what right the UN had to award Europeans land in the Middle East is quite beyond me). OF COURSE Palestinians resist ALL European Jewish settlement in the region, because for the last many centuries that land has been in their hands.....or under Islamic control, one way or another, except for the incursion of Europeans in the 19th century. Really, Israel is the last European colony in the Middle East. I do not understand the notion of "right of return" for all Jewish people all over the globe, but NO right of return for Palestinian people. Ms Bigmack

34. Too bad no Palestinians

Will be able to settle in any of those homes. They get kicked out of the shacks they inhabit and forced out into the street. They will be bulldozed down with the building, for defending their property.

Building new settlements is a terrible provocation.

I wish they wouldn't. Stop it. Please back off! Let peace begin.

but wants to keep the land grab going ad infinitum.

48. And because you sit in the room with the kids, I'll smash that one first

This seems to be a more complete version of the "brilliant policy."
