Stake in Keystone Pipeline Is Potential Conflict for Susan Rice

Source: New York Times

"Federal filings show that Ms. Rice and her husband own at least $1.5 million worth of holdings in Enbridge, which transports Canadian oil sands crude through the United States. The company was heavily criticized by environmental groups after a 2010 pipeline spill dumped more than 840,000 gallons of oil near Marshall, Michigan, leading to the closure of a 39-mile stretch of the Kalamazoo River."

This may be Ms. Rice's biggest hurdle to jump if she is nominated. The State Department has jurisdiction of the pipeline.

16. Are her investments the only ones that should concern us?

I suspect that all too many people in the higher reaches of government may have invested in things that could potentially influence their future decisions in ways we might not care for.

Is the interest in Susan Rice's investment portfolio just an additional way to attack HER?

Maybe we should show equal concern about ALL government officials' investments?

3. What about John Kerrys investments in Tar Sands companies?

What about John Boehners investments in Tar Sands companies, and he gets campaign donations from the same companies......

10. If Kerry has any LISTED holdings, they are from his Senate disclosure

and he has been clear that all the stocks are in various trust funds that benefit either Kerry or Teresa. Neither he or Teresa have any control over what the holdings are and neither are trustees . The trusts have many beneficiaries. Kerry's are the Forbes and the Winthrop trusts that he and his siblings inherited from their mother. teresa's are inherited from Senator Heinz.

Here is a link that includes a letter where he explained that when he was mentioned in Sweitzer's book. http://www.businessinsider.com/insider-trading-congress-john-kerry-retraction-peter-schweizer-2011-11

His office has had to answer this question often.

4. I have a serious problem with Susan Rice about this.

There are at least two major conflicts of interest. One is that the State Department has jurisdiction over the pipeline itself. The other is that the U.S. has a recent history of getting into wars in oil-rich regions, and it just plain doesn't look good when the Secretary of State stands to personally benefit from oil profits.

I hope that President Obama does not nominate her.

5. I tend to agree with you, yardwork

Of course, anyone nominated operates in a whole other world from us - millionaires galore with portfolios that would cause my eyes to glaze over! But oil is dirty - wars have been fought, untold millions have died, catastrophic environmental damage has occurred and will occur.

13. I also take issue with the way she is presented by those who favor her as having

spent her entire life 'in public service'. When I looked up her bio and found her personal wealth was in the tens of millions, without any significant career in private sector high dollar gigs I read more and found she's the daughter of a President of the Federal Reserve. She was born inside and wealthy and her 'public service' has almost exclusively been in realms where her decisions could potentially increase her own wealth. Every dust up she's around is in an oil nation.
I am not comfortable with her, nor with this wrapping folks up as public servants when they are Mega Rich and serve themselves.
She's very 1%. In both biography and personal deeds and choices.

She would be banned from posting on DU. Well, according to some.

Anyway, she is of the 1%. The other 99% are breathing a big loss on her investments.

11. Say NO to key

We should not allow the rich oil companies to use our country as a transport for those greedy oil to make even more money by sending it overseas. Most of the oil they get from Alaska is sent Asia and Europe.

15. As a side note, I was in Marshall, Michigan on Nov. 9th and...

the air in the Kalamazoo River area still reeks of petroleum, 2+ years after Enbridge poisoned it. I can't begin to imagine why anyone would invest in Enbridge.
