House GOP Committee Chairs will be all white and all male in next Congress

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced who will chair all of the major House committees in the next Congress. And it turns out they all have something in common besides party affiliation: they're all white men.

There isn't a single woman or minority included in the mix of 19 House committee chairs announced Tuesday -- a stark reality for a party desperate to appeal to women and minorities after both groups overwhelmingly rejected Republicans just weeks ago in the presidential election. The one female committee chair that House Republicans currently have, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), is stepping down because her term is up. While there are still two lower-tier House committees awaiting a chair assignment -- the Ethics Committee and House Administration -- neither committee has any women or minority members.

At least one Senate Democrat was quick to point out that something is missing from the Republican lineup.

"Disappointed to see House committee chairmanships in the 113th Congress will not include a single woman. -PM," tweeted Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who included a link to Boehner's press release announcing the chair posts.

Seems the GOP will never break from their white male dominated orientation, despite the fact they're trying to appeal to women and minorities.

16. P.Ryan's smug mug is smack center

Isn't he about "Termed out." by the Goober rules that chairs can only serve a certain number of terms..
With the Democrats picking up 8 seats, will there be a fairer distribution on the various committees between Democrats and R's.

17. Last paragraph of the article on the link in the OP says ...

He obtained a waiver to go around House rules and stay on as committee chair in the next Congress.

I'm not sure what you meant by the other part of your comment - ALL the 'chairmen' on The House committees are 'Republican'.

Here's a current list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_House_committees

I looked at the panel and recognized the style and just uttered "that's looks like an Auth"... and sure enough it was.

Miss him here in Philly but glad he cut ties with the Philly Inquirer because they have done them all wrong!!!

3. Not a smart move politically

To borrow a phrase from the creepy-freepies, the 'GOP-E' seems intent on political suicide. My republican step-dad is having coniptions because Jeb Bush is gearing up to run in 2016.

The rank and file repubs, that I know personally, are all tearing their hair out over the naivety and flat-out political-gamemanship-ignorance of the party leadership, but the lofty elites just don't get it. You'd think after this election they would, but they don't.

Oh well. More victories for us, eh?

...they would have had to pick Democrats

4. republicans break rules again

'House committee chairs are term-limited, so all of the new chairmen are replacing someone who had to step down. Still, one lawmaker obtained a waiver to go around House rules and stay on as committee chair in the next Congress, despite his term being up: Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) will remain atop the House Budget Committee.'

I guess they like LOSERS more than they like rules

11. Small point on that AD, it's the repug's rule, not the House's.

Democrats in the House do not have term limits. The repugs imposed that rule on themselves.

Never saw the Ryan exception coming though!

Oh wait, Mittens lost big time....so Ryan has no coat-tails. So why were the rules broken for him then?

12. From the link in the OP. To be fair ...

-snip-

To be fair, House committee chairs are typically chosen based on their seniority on the committee, and most committees don't have Republican women or minorities at senior levels. In addition, there just aren't that many House Republican women and minorities to go around. In the 113th Congress, which kicks off in January, House Republicans will have 20 women in their camp, compared to 61 House Democratic women. You can count on two hands the number of House Republicans who are minorities. By contrast, in the new Congress, the House Democratic Caucus will have a majority of women and minorities for the first time in history.

Still, that doesn't mean Republican leaders couldn't have picked at least one woman or minority for a committee leadership post. Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.), who is currently eighth in seniority on the House Homeland Security Committee, had a decent shot at taking over that committee. Instead, the chair post went to Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), who is ranked fifth in seniority.

-snip-

13. Hold on folks... this picture is going to change one of these days....

.... to more represent the rainbow of America. It's why this pic is making the rounds... it might be the last time we see another like it. Of course, we have to GOTV in those gerrymandered districts long before 2014 gets here. I don't care what Nate Silver says. He needs to be wrong on this one. GO 2014!
It's a scary pic isn't it?

Did anyone expect differently? They are trying to figure out how the heck they lost and how best to reach out to women and minorities. That's gonna take a really, really long time considering their base and how to deal with the backlash from it.

25. This is Awesome news.

The party of Lies just confirmed their war on women and minorities, despite their vociferous counter claims during the campaign.

The party of dwindling numbers just reminded the vast majority of minority and female voters that they are an exclusive club of dying White men.

The Party of fear just isolated themselves in full public view, so we know who they are.

They have just ensured Democratic takeover of the House in 2014!

Loving it.

Now, the only real Conservatives left are in the Democratic Party, which means things will start moving left again.
