Colorado Springs Next Front in Fracking War...

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) The next front in the Colorado battle over oil and gas fracking is Colorado Springs. That's where critics of the drilling practice plan a protest Tuesday in search of more curbs on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

The Colorado Springs rally comes in advance of a city council meeting where officials are scheduled to talk about oil and gas drilling regulations. Critics say the proposed regulations need more environmental safeguards.

The Colorado Springs rally comes three weeks after citizens in Longmont overwhelmingly voted to ban hydraulic fracturing over similar concerns. State officials and the oil and gas industry say local governments can't set their own drilling rules.

The process involves blasting water, sand and chemicals underground to free oil and natural gas.

1. Colorado Springs voted for this?

Or is Longmont a different city that voted against fracking?

3. Longmont is separate

I live in Longmont, and it is a separate city (northeast of Boulder) that voted for an amendment that banned fracking, over the objections of most of the "city fathers" (several current and former mayors and city council members campaigned aggressively against the amendment and against the ban).

9. Even Gov Hickenlooper was being an asshole about it.

I'm ready to kick him out next year in a primary fight if there is one.

4. No, Longmont is a different city, just north of Denver

To my knowledge, none of the recent ballot measures were on fracking in the Springs area.

2. This will be interesting. Colorado Springs...

has a large libertarian voting base. This was the town/city that privatized a huge number of otherwise normally public works.

6. It has a bunch of libertarians AND a bunch of Christian fundies. No better place to frack -- both

those sets of people deserve it. They're the "drill, drill, drill!" bunch.

Even though the area, which is beautiful, does not deserve it.

10. "State officials and the oil and gas industry say local governments can't...

set their own drilling rules."

That says it all right there. I guess we know who owns the state officials.
