Australia to abstain from Palestine vote

Source: AAP

Australia will abstain from voting on a contentious Palestinian bid for upgraded United Nations status after Prime Minister Julia Gillard caved in to intense pressure from within her party.

The Labor government will not vote for or against the Palestinian resolution when it comes before the UN General Assembly on Thursday, even though Ms Gillard strongly opposes it.

Ms Gillard told a Labor caucus meeting on Tuesday she would support the abstention after canvassing the views of her ministers and backbenchers and finding many with views sharply different from her own.

But she warned she did not think the resolution would advance the cause of peace in the Middle East.

1. The government's stance is likely to anger Israel...

which had hoped Australia would join it and the United States in voting against the bid, which it says breaks a 1993 agreement on Palestinian statehood. Comment has been sought from the Israeli embassy in Canberra.

2. Good for Them

It's time to stand up to Zionism and its racist outlook. Playing fair with all people should be the aim of every government. The United States too easily gives into the Zionists and we are looked down upon for our blindness.

8. How would you know?

Have you lived in Israel as a Jew from Africa? Have you witnessed how Shephardic Jews fare or haveyouwitnessed the slaughter of the Palestinians?

9. U.N. Repeals Its '75 Resolution Equating Zionism With Racism

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly today to revoke the bitterly contested statement it approved in 1975 that said "Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination."

The official count found 111 nations in favor of repealing the statement and 25 nations, mostly Islamic and hard-line Communists, voting against. Thirteen nations abstained. Seventeen other countries, including Egypt, which recognizes Israel, and Kuwait and China, did not take part in the voting.

10. Zionism is the belief that Jews have the right to a homeland.

Do you think there is something racist about that?

Albert Einstein was a Zionist. Do you think Albert Einstein was a racist?

11. Oh, really?

That's as an authoritarian statement as I've ever heard. Zionism is judged by its philosophy and the behavior of its adherents; not by a decree by some political body.

12. Oh, really?

So, because SOME Zionists don't respect the rights of Palestinians, you're saying that Zionism is a racist philosophy?

That itself is a bigoted statement.

4. Step forward

Seeing that are the only major nation that voted against 65/16. Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine along, of course with the US & Israel and powerhouses such as Micronesia and something called Palau, it's actually a good move in isolating the veto-er and the active participant.

6. Yes but...

Only because their request is for "non-member observer state" If it was for full statehood it would have to go to the UNSC where...well, we all know what would happen there. In fact, it already happened last year.
