Sen. Graham: ‘Grover is wrong… I will violate the pledge’

By David Edwards
Sunday, November 25, 2012 13:29 EST

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Sunday said that he was willing to break with anti-tax lobbyist Grover Norquist and find ways to raise additional revenues for the government because he was worried that spending cuts would hurt the military.

Norquist recently insisted to The Wall Street Journal that no Republicans would violate his tax pledge because of the so-called fiscal cliff, which he called of a “completely invented crisis” where lawmakers of both parties agreed to automatic rate increases and spending cuts.

“What I would say to Grover is that the sequester destroys the United States military,” Graham told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. “I am willing to generate revenue. It’s fair to ask my party to put revenue on the table. We’re below historic averages. I will not raise tax rates to do it. I will cap deductions.”

“But to do this, I don’t just want a promise of spending cuts, I want entitlement reforms,” he added. “Republicans always put revenue on the table, Democrats always promise to cut spending. Well, we never cut spending. What I am looking for is more revenue for entitlement reform before the end of the year. I think that’s the magic deal.”

The president has all the cards in his hand. Mr. President, take us off the cliff before there is any reduction in entitlements!

30. Obviously, if the President has all the cards, it's time to give Graham some.

Isn't that what we've seen as a way to "negotiate" with the Republicans?

4. I can't pretend to understand.

The entire US tax system, so would stand correcting, but it seems like they are after earned income according to the article, hitting the middle and lower sections again.

Can I just question the Libertarians and Tea Party over their desire to charge forward to the 1770's. Was not the idea of taxation then to put tariffs on trade and manufacturing rather than taxing toil? From across the pond they would seem to be applying Alice's Looking Glass in their political reflections and ruminations. I don't mean to come down in favour of any particular financial model, it just seems a little...wacky may I say.

6. Grover was wrong from day one

The pledge would have carried more weight if it were
to spend wisely, on long term public investments, to
fiercely root out waste and abuse ....

in other words, to get good value for the American People

not to simply starve the government for the sake of low taxes

Grover was wrong, Grover is wrong

Sometimes spending is good, beneficial. Sometimes
tax hikes are good if they're for an important purpose

Grover would carry more weight if the pledge were about
spending frugally, and not operating in the red

It would have kept a reign on GW Bush's borrowing for
wars and millionaire tax cuts

Maybe Grover should have focused on Greenspan

7. Graham: you can't call it a "violation" unless you're still subject to Grover as authority.

You're never going to get "revenue for entitlement reform." You'll have to cut spending on the military. And you'll probably have to give up on not taxing the 1% or just go over your "fiscal cliff."

Either you can say you're "evolving" your entire outlook on social services -- which are NOT entitlements -- the military and the US budget, Graham, or you're still paying obeisance to some extremist corporate religionist.

The house of cards might be folding for Norquist, but the RepublicanSpeak here is just more Sunday talk show bullshit.

If you have money, you can always find a write-off.

10. Does Graham

and his millionaire buddies in Congress depend on Social Security and Medicare? Social Security which is the pensions for most Americans doesn't need to be touched and the retirement age need not to be increased period! Now we can look for waste as long as Graham's Party don't lie and call them cuts like Romney did. We shouldn't eliminate the actual benefits though. We had an election amd some one won. No pundit in the news media or talking head shows should be trying to influence that decision. They do not talk for the american people. They misunderstand their jobs. It irritates me when they make claims, the American public voted to make cuts in entitlements.

Social Security and medicare were discussed in this election. In fact both candidates were pointing fingers and accusing each other of wanting to cut those programs. Romney lost, because we knew he was lying. So now you got the pundits ( most in the upperclass and white) claiming the american public voted to cut their entitlements. These pundits think we are dumb. They need to come out of their glass houses and communicate with the public. That is the reason people have a low opinion of pundits. They are just as arrogant as Romney's contributors.

Because Graham also thinks Rice should have revealed classified information during a TV interview. As for what he wants: dont rise tax rates, f*ck poor people and the middle class, and increase the military budget.

Yes, no deal unless the weak are made to suffer more.
I'd curse you, Mr. Graham, but since you're already 9/10ths of the way to hell, I think the exercise would be futile.
Does he deserve all the authority and visibility he's given?
I think not.

blah, blah, blah...

Jumping on the "talking point" bandwagon for the time being. Now that AMERICA is finally seeing Grover, the UNELECTED Man in the Shadows, there will be a panic by the Pukes (aka: ALEC!) to *publicly* run away from him.

BUT I doubt that the Pukes and Baggers will run very far away...they've got too much involved with him, his crazy and the 1%er's.

20. So, in other weasel words...

Miss Lindsay really doesn't have the guts to violate King Grover's pledge. Putting some sort of "cap" on deductions as the means of raising revenue is just a cowardly way of saying you don't have the balls to vote for a tax hike. Capping deductions isn't going to come anywhere near raising the revenue we need, you slimy, little twerp.

28. They

do, and they will see a revolt. First of all, it will not work, because it will place more people in poverty. It will be detrimental to people's health. And the people that they propose to raise retirement ages, that are nearing retirement, will be very, very angry. These people proposing these chamges are all in the upper class. None of it affects them. They also use our money, for their own pet projects, like waging War, to protect their foreign investments overseas. That is what you need to scale back. I heard a rumor there was something else found in that so called consulate in Benghazi too. How about supposedly Oil contracts? Isn't that how Gadaffi financed his regime? Frankly, I think it was a CIA operation that went wrong. And I still don't believe Petraeus provided a sufficient link between Al Qaeda and Ansar Al Sharia. They keep saying Al Qaeda as the primary attacker, but the only evidence says Ansar Al Sharia. Witnesses saw trucks with logos from Ansar Al Sharia. What am I missing here?

I thought the right made fun of liberals for talking about "revenue enhancements." They are worse with this nonsense - that's for sure.

29. This will provide the cover for anyone-who-claims-to-be-a-Centrist to agree to screw the

middle class.

As Graham says:
"I will not raise tax rates to do it. I will cap deductions."

Reagan did away with the sales tax deduction and put caps on other middle-class deductions.

Graham and anyone who wants to compromise with him will be willing to eliminate or put more caps on mortgage deductions.
