Protests greet shoppers at Wal-Marts nationwide

Source: Omaha World Herald-AP

By SARAH SKIDMORE

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Wal-Mart workers and supporters marched in protest at stores nationwide Thursday and Friday, blasting the wages, benefits and treatment of employees at the world's largest retailer.

The efforts seemed to do little to keep shoppers away though - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it was its best Black Friday ever.

In Paramount, Calif., authorities arrested nine people, including three Wal-Mart employees, for blocking a busy street outside a store there. Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said they were cited and released on misdemeanor charges.

At its height, authorities said, the Paramount protest drew about 1,000 people.

It is insane for anybody to expect that this strike would bring Wal Mart to its knees. Many anti union/worker people are happily calling it a failure because most of the customers shopped anyway. But, I guarantee that Friday shook up Wal Mart management as well as other big retailers. Now the retaliation against the workers will begin. They need to be proud and understand that what they did was historic and that it will take many more large and small acts to turn the tide at a predatory business like Wal Mart. The employees can draw strength from all the support they did receive from outside Unions and other organizations. Solidarity!

7. I agree with you. This is the start of a long process.

As we work to gradually increase public awareness of these issues, pressure will build on Walmart management. Yes the parking lot at my local Walmart was full yesterday. But time is on our side and not on the side of Walmart.

It seems like more has been accomplished on the Walmart front in 2012 than ever before. It's a huge success. For one thing, Walmart workers know about this now. They know there are alot of people willing to support them. Walmart has always been retaliating against people, but people are starting to bring the issue out of the shadows and have a bit of a public fight. That's the best way to expose an abuser and a bully. They have to be called out in public.

10. Point made!

I think they accomplished their goal....and that was to bring attention to how WalMart is screwing their employees. I HATE going in to a WalMart store...and have maybe only three time in my life. My staying away isn't going to make or break their success. But I am well aware of how they treat their employees with sub-standard, poverty-level wages. My wife INSISTS on going there...but I always seem to manage to steer her away.

Good for the employees. I hope they are able to gain something from all this attention.

Sure they are going to say it did not cause a problem. This is just more spin that they put out. Don't believe them , just keep fighting for your cause.
