Indian schoolgirl attempts suicide after being paraded naked by teacher for 'stealing' 15

The scale of cruelty and corporal punishment in Indian schools was highlighted yesterday by the attempted suicide of 13 year girl who was paraded naked by a teacher for 'stealing' 15.

By Dean Nelson in New Delhi
3:01PM GMT 23 Nov 2012

The girl was forced to remove her clothes by a female teacher at a school in north-west Delhi after being accused of stealing money and a mobile phone from a classmate. She returned home after school and jumped off the balcony of her four-storey block of flats. Her relatives said she had been distraught by her public humiliation.

Her case emerged amid a series of reports of brutal attacks on children by teachers throughout India. A four year old boy was forced to drink his own urine by his nursery teacher in Andhra Pradesh to punish him for wetting himself. A five year old boy in the same state was beaten up by a grammar school principal, while a seven year old Dalit girl was thrashed by her mathematics teacher for failing to solve a problem. A teacher was arrested in Madhya Pradesh for partially scalping an eight year old girl .

Colin Gonsolves, director of India's Human Rights Law Network, said while corporal punishment in schools is illegal it remains widespread.

"In practice we are still beating our children in our schools It doesn't just include beating the child, we have witnessed cases of sexual abuse, mental harassment and long term psychological traumas in many children. As far as the schooling system is concerned we are still living in dark ages and acting as an uncivilised and backward society," he said.

17. Sadly this mentality exists around the world.

Look at the American teens who commit suicide over being bullied on social media over unflattering photos or even more trivial stuff. It's a dog-eat-dog social dominance world out there.

3. I started kindergarten in a Catholic School in the early 60's

I recall getting my ass WHIPPED with a 'peter pointer' pointing stick when I didn't answer a math question correctly ... in front of the class ...

I became an Atheist soon after my confirmation some years later, and haven't looked back since ...

You be the judge ...

8. nuns are scary

I flashed back to Catholic school reading this story too. An abused generation teaches the next generation of innocent children.
From this distance, and having known some nuns I like and admire, I can see how the cycle of abuse continues when inequality and fear are the drivers.

11. In my completely secular junior high school in PA, a

pull down poster of the periodic elements was kept permanently pulled down in our science classroom--to cover the hole where the science teacher, a burly middle-aged man, had put a student's head through the blackboard.

Teachers across our country have been denied the right to assert appropriate authority in the classroom, so that it is almost impossible to maintain order--yet in the past, they were allowed to physically and emotionally abuse chidlren in their care, and in some schools (especially but not only in the South), they still are permitted to do so.

We really need to find a rational balance point, where appropriate authority does not morph into abuse--both in our schools and in our entire society. Unfortunately, I really doubt that we ever will.

Fortunately, though, we have moved beyond the point where abuse such as this, which is widespread in many societies, is untypical enough to shock most people in the US.

If only our teachers in America didn't have all those damn rules!

Bring on the Charter Schools now!!!!

As posted, it looked like you were defending what the teacher did here.

6. This is surreal....not possible!

This story is beyond comprehension. The teacher needs to be fired and punished beyond. The student needs a new start some place where they don't have mini-Hitlers running the educational system.

How tragic. Utterly tragic!

7. Sounds more like...

...a fetish on the part of the teacher than punishment.

Oh this process of evolution is so arduously slow at times isn't it? We become so distracted and full of hubris when we invent something or land on the moon and then we remember that some of the least of us are still pulling shit like this.

To be alive in another million years or so...I wonder.

12. These sociopaths get away with this shit only when it's hidden from public view.

The last thing these perverted people want is critical attention on their behavior. So good to see this hit the media and I hope it raises awareness in India of what's going on. I'm sure there are going to be conservative, fundamentalist idiots who agree with hurting children but there has got to be enough good people to stand up against this.

18. I hope she fully recovers, finds a new caring school and sues the sh** out of this one.

Bad enough when the bullies are other kids, but so sick when it's an adult who is supposed to have your best mental and intellectual interests at heart-no matter what. Children often make the mistake, at least once, of stealing some item or money. Mistakes are how we learn. Humiliating public abuse of a child for such a mistake should be criminal.
