100-car pileup in Texas fog kills two, injures dozens

Two people died and dozens were hurt Thursday morning when around 100 vehicles crashed in heavy fog along Interstate 10 near Beaumont, Texas, the local sheriff's office told NBC News.

Between 80 and 120 people were hurt, said sheriff's office spokesman Rod Carroll. Eight of the injured were in serious condition, he added.

Earlier reports said one person had died.

The chain-reaction accidents happened over a two-mile stretch between Taylor's Bayou and Hampshire Road. Both directions were closed for several hours before westbound lanes were reopened. Eastbound lanes were still closed.

3. So sad. It can be a pretty straight road. The speed limit was 70mph. "Many of the vehicles were

moving close to the posted speed of 70 mph despite dense fog that limited visibility..." Rushing to
be with family for Thanksgiving.

5. I've driven that stretch many many times.

The fog down there gets scary thick. I'm glad my mom and I didn't go down to visit family this Thanksgiving, we could easily have been caught in that accident.

7. I know it also. These chain accidents have happened there before. Isn't there some

kind of fog warning system which might be effective?

6. I live in Beaumont and was glad my kids left late to come! People taking chances darting in and

out of traffic risk everyone's life as do those traveling too fast for the conditions!
