McCain Refuses To Support Any Secretary Of State Nominee

Source: ThinkProgress

By Aviva Shen on Nov 18, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has not hesitated to voice his distaste towards U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, who may be nominated to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. On Face the Nation Sunday morning, McCain went even further than simply opposing Rice’s nomination and said that, “until we find out all the information” on the Benghazi consulate attacks, he would not support any Secretary of State nominee.
McCain at first said it “might be a beginning” if Rice could come on the program to explain her position. But when pressed by host Bob Schieffer, the Arizona senator dug in and refused to support any nominee “under the present circumstances”:

SCHIEFFER: Until then, you will remain opposed to her nomination?

MCCAIN: Under the present circumstances, until we find out all the information as to what happened, I don’t think you would want to support any nominee right now. Because this is very very serious and it has even larger implications than the deaths of 4 Americans. It really goes to the heart of this whole light foot print policy that this administration is pursuing.

Watch it:

I know she enjoys her work and has liked the job, but wants to take a break. I totally understand that. Considering she's been flying around the world for 4 years, McCain is being a shithead by saying he'll block nominations making it harder for her to leave.

7. McCain has been this way his entire life.

He is a little boy who never grew up. Even in the navy he was a loose canon, a cowboy, a child with a toy. And like, it seems, so many republican politicians these days, he is an emotional child who has never really looked deeply into his problems, either before or after his experiences in Vietnam.

Whether the president "knew" or not is irrelevant. So far it appears that national security was not a risk. As yet, it also appears that no crime was committed.

that's EXACTLY what he was after.Someone as arrogant as McCain cannot bear the thought of fading into insignificance, with no committee to head. He may also have seen this as an opening to impeach Obama.

74. He surely wouldn't have done well on indian affairs. No love lost there...

Over the years, there have been complaints about McCain's actions on the indian affairs committee. These are a couple of links and one can decide if this is valid or if he saw the writing on the wall:

http://bsnorrell.blogspot.com/2011/02/navajo-remove-john-mccain-from-senate.html

http://www.docudharma.com/diary/9370/

Someone else may know more, but it would be a strong reason for him to squeal now. For some reason the GOP doesn't have another position to suit his fancy. He is proving to be an opportunist of the worst kind.

??? Is this an indication that he will become the new meaner-than-nails minority leader in the Senate in the 113th Congress? The new and "improved" Mitch McConnell? Since the "Godfather of all things military and intelligence" can have some semblance of credibility, since he has no committee to head and utterly no credibility left at all? Yeah, I think something is up. Mitch McConnell has been walking around with a doo-doo-eating-grin on his face. Has anyone else noticed this?

22. It

is not just McCain, it is his whole Party. They are trying to pin a scandal on the Administration. There is no cover up or scandal. They shouldn't get any support from the Democrats period. It is part of their obstruction. All they have been doing is trying to create a scandal with the help of media pundits. Do you guys notice how these pundits keep inviting Republicans on these talk shows without scheduling Democrats unless they are specific Democrats? They want to keep the drum beat going there was something done wrong. There was nothing new on everyone of these talk shows except Republicans trying to plant the seed the Administration did something wrong or tried to cover something up. Notice how one off them planted a seed Eric Holder told President Obama about the investigation of Petraeus without any evidence. He just wanted to plant another seed so the media can put it out there. How much time is being spent on the Republicans trying to build up public opinion for investigations? These people will continue this nonsense, instead of focusing on real issues. Do you see anybody from the families complaining? This is all drummed up by the Republican Party.

This is a ploy I think to stop Hillary from running and winning the presidency in 2016

btw, if HIllary quits, isn't the assistant SOS elevated to the job til a permanent is named?

Does McCain actually want no one in the job?

At which point, we could send all troops home and send billions in love worldwide, instead of soldiers.

We never heard a peep when 3000 Americans died because a daily brief was ignored. We never heard a peep when the other Rice lied continuously to the American people.

But now he wants to yell, screech and scream to the world that this is 'worse than watergate', conveniently neglecting to mention his party was responsible for slashing the funds that could have been used for embassy security and construction.

Nothing hypocritical about that.

I personally believe that the Senator is totally wrong on this issue. My respect for him goes to his Navy Combat Service in Vietnam as a Carrier Pilot who was shot down. The Senator spent six years in as a POW. I was stationed aboard the USS Constellation CVA-64 in 1966-1968.

On the whole issue of Libya I really do not think the attack was stoppable and of course my respect and sadness goes out to those Americans who were murdered.

That would be amusing.....

As I post this, it just occurred to me that maybe that's why he is so grumpy and angry....aside from losing in 2008 and knowing he will never be President, he realizes how irrelevant he is in the Senate and he probably had been promised by Romney to become Secretary of State or Defense.

This has nothing to do about Rice and everything to do about his hate for Obama. The whipping Romney took must have given him flashbacks.

57. So that's the problem

He's a war hawk and thinks we should be the leading force in every country - by loading them up on soldiers ..."light footprint policy" indeed, that really is sticking in his craw for some reason.

62. That does it, the damn fool is senile for sure. I recall Reagan

being useless in certain cases, BUT it was kept underwraps. This tool keeps coming out into public and proving how out of touch he really is.

63. With his temper

when can he be moved to the point of being censured and not allowed to block nominations period? He is not THE power in his party's leadership. He is a loser crank still out of step and incompetent to deliver anything for the agenda. That is not so much a rant as a rather apparent reality.

64. So they are going to keep obstructing until they are irrelevant?

You know what? I'm ok with that. We'll have another FDR type era when every state is blue.

68. John McCain is 76 years old.

Ronald Reagan was 69 years old when first elected in 1981 and and ended his term in 1989 at the age of 77. But Reagan did exhibit signs of dementia before leaving office. That, IMO, is a horrible way to die and even worse for the family. So, I wouldn't wish that on on anyone. Senator McCain is now 76 years old (I think). Now, I am not inferring that Senator McCain is suffering from the same medical issues that President Reagan did at the end of his life.

My point, although probably a flimsy one, is that McCain may be getting a tad bit beyond being of reasonable mind and may be suffering from some medical issues. Although, having said that....Arlen Specter was 82 upon his death and I loved that man. His book is wonderful, insightful and genius. That man should have been a stand-up comic instead of a politician!

I fear that McCain does not have a complete grasp upon reality now. What Senator would skip a significant hearing in order to have a press conference on said hearing? It doesn't make sense to me. I respect his war record and his perseverance and survival as a POW. It is truly much more than admirable.

But recently (okay - more than that) I seriously question his mental capacity. Might just be me...but politics aside, it is more than concerning.

69. this idiot

does NOTHING for Arizona, except cause embarassment. But like Brewer and Arpaio, was re-elected by the jackasses of Maricopa County. One can only hope these jerks are voted out, one by one. One problem is McCain's name recognition and lack of opponents who can beat him. He's not even an Arizona native, has been known to flip-flop, and seems to be turning senile. Partner that with an ugly temper and his obvious grudge against the President....and he needs to go.

He is over the hill, down the other side, and half way through Foggy Memories Valley!!

This dude is senile.
He is completely clueless how irrelevant he is now.

91. What do Reagan, GWB, McCain and Romney have in common...other than the obvious?

All a beer short of a six pack...for varying reasons to he be sure, but still as we used to say, "tetched in the head". Don't know which is the saddest...those who put them up for office, or the unsuspecting who vote for them, often more than once.
