McCain on Benghazi: ‘I Knew It Was A Terrorist Attack From The Beginning’

Source: TPM

HALIFAX, Canada -- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that nothing he learned in a closed-door briefing Friday with former CIA Director David Petraeus would change his criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's initial public statements about the Sept.11 Benghazi attack.

Asked Saturday at a press conference at the Halifax International Security Forum if anything he was told by Petraeus would change his assessment of what Rice knew and the statements she made, McCain said, "No, because I knew it was a terrorist attack from the beginning. People don't go to spontaneous demonstrations with mortars and RPGs."

Earlier this week, McCain said that Rice's comments on the Sunday news shows five days after the Benghazi attack disqualified her to be Obama's next secretary of state.

McCain reiterated that it should have been immediately apparent to the administration that the Benghazi attack was not triggered by Libyan demonstrators protesting an anti-Muslim YouTube video. "There were people who were at the consulate who flew to Germany the next day. They knew there was no spontaneous demonstration. They knew that. And they were interviewed. So there should have been no doubt whatsoever of that," McCain said.

McCain also brushed off a letter sent to him Friday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) in which Reid rejected McCain's call for a Senate select committee to investigate Benghazi and said it would be a "venue for baseless partisan attacks." Responding to the letter, McCain said, "I'm concerned about four Americans who died. Their families need to know the circumstances, why it happened, how it happened, and where responsibility lies. That's all. That's all that we're seeking. We're not seeing a confrontation with anyone. We're not trying to quote 'take on anyone.'"

Is it possible that McCain is one of the terrorists?

I wanna ask WHO gives a shit about the THOUSANDS of AMERICANS blown away in two ridiculous wars of late????????? How does FOUR outweigh THOUSANDS??? Obviously adelpated old McVain and his co-dolts suffer from extreme dementia! McCain should do one last patriotic gesture and CROAK!

We bitch and moan about having a test to allow people to vote; we should have an intelligence test to allow citizens to become Congressmen. This guy would fail on any test you could come up with. I swear to God, I'd bet he has an IQ of about 80, and simply his family name got him his fame...and his POW status guaranteed him a job for the rest of his life AT OUR EXPENSE!!!

She had or has had some sort of medical problems. Off hand I can't recall anything good that he has done for our nation. I think he has some sort of superiority complex that disallows him from using what brains he has left.

On July 3, 1965, McCain married Carol Shepp, a model originally from Philadelphia. McCain adopted her two young children Douglas and Andrew. He and Carol then had a daughter named Sidney.

They didn't get divorced until 1980.

We need to frame this in terms of national security. It's clear that McCain and his crew don't care about protecting national security as much as they do about embarrassing the Administration.

They heard the "why" directly from Petraus, but they don't give a shit.

23. Why oh why can't they ever say what she said in its entirety...........

the truth for once:

Schieffer’s next guest was Rahm Emmanuel. Incredibly, he quickly asked this:
SCHIEFFER: Now you weren’t there, obviously you don’t have access to this information, but you were White House chief of staff. How is it that so many of, versions of events could come out of this thing? I mean, you know, yes, yes, he— Yes, said in the Rose Garden, he referred to a terrorist attack. But five days later, Susan Rice was right here on this broadcast and on other Sunday broadcasts saying that no, it wasn’t. And I mean, how is it that that could happen?
Gack!

On the September 16 Face the Nation, Susan Rice did not say that no, it wasn’t a terrorist attack. She said the violence began when “extremist elements” arrived at the consulate “with heavy weapons of the sort that are, unfortunately, readily now available in Libya post-revolution. And that it spun from there into something much, much more violent.”

That’s what Rice actually said to Schieffer right there on his own freaking program. Surely Schieffer has access to transcripts and tapes! But this has all been disappeared as people like McCain—and Schieffer himself—keep pushing a thoroughly scripted and grossly misleading line.

Attack on Lybia consulate/annex...dead Ambassador...

Nobody is thinking,,,"pink robots???"..."bunnies???"

I think people understand the administration using caution when revealing details (and who we call "terrorist") to the media in the aftermath of an attack like this.

27. What Is McCain's Point

I have never understood it. Really.

He is still bitter from losing to Obama in 2008 so he goes looking for things to criticize but I don't see what his point is nor what difference it makes anyway. The CIA was protecting sources so the data they gave the public was at odds in some ways with the classified data they had on file.

Lastly, this was not a major attack. A single rogue American soldier killed more than 4 in Afghanistan not that long ago. I'm not saying those attacks are the same. I'm only bringing it up to put the size of the attack in perspective. Both are small potatoes in the big picture of things.

By all means investigate to locate lapses in security but I'm sure that is ongoing anyway. Indications are that this was not a pre-planned attack but an attack that was hastily put together to be carried out under the cover of other demonstrations.

41. How could he know for sure unless he had advance knowledge? Is this what he

wants people to think? It takes time to assess what happened and to gather evidence. We don't need any more shoot from the hip kind of politicians. IMHO, it would have been better if Ambassador Rice hadn't said anything until more information was in and if the CIA had kept its suppositions to itself until it was more sure what happened. The CIA's analysis is something that everyone should take with a grain of salt until others are on the ground to provide assessments free from security/intelligence considerations.

needs to stop lying. I'm going to expose him again. Stephen's family even told Mitt Romney to quit politicizing her son' death to attack President Obama, which even Romney honored. Those families also know about the situation more than John McCain. And when someone gets killed in the line of Duty, they get direct correspondence from the commander in charge. Chris Stephens came directly under President Obama's office, because they were his people. McCain is not the only one been in the military. He is now using the families of those people that lost their lives in the line of duty for this country.
