President surprises with early Burma trip

BANGKOK: The US President, Barack Obama, has surprised the world by choosing to travel to Burma two weeks after his re-election triumph, the first trip by a US president to the south-east Asian nation that is emerging from five decades of repressive military rule.

The trip will have enormous symbolic importance for Burma, where the President, Thein Sein, has overseen dramatic reforms and where the pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been allowed to be become opposition leader and a member of parliament.

The White House has announced that Mr Obama will meet Thein Sein in the opulent capital Naypyitaw, built by the junta, and Ms Suu Kyi at her home in Rangoon, where she spent 15 years under house arrest.

The visit will shore up Mr Thein Sein's leadership and deliver a blow to ageing Burmese generals who think the reforms have gone too far, too fast.

It will be viewed with concern in Beijing which has for decades been Burma's closest ally.
