Obama wins, Netanyahu losesThis discussion thread was locked as off-topic by muriel_volestrangler (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). JERUSALEM — President Barack Obama’s decisive victory provoked a day of political ricochets in Israel, which faces elections of its own in just under two and a half months. In Jerusalem Tel Aviv, the day after the elections felt a bit like it does when a cousin delivers bombshell news at a family reunion, with eruptions of frenzy and concern. There were those, like esteemed Ha’aretz columnist Chemi Shalev, who wagged their fingers in slightly reproachful I-told-you-so’s. No one had been fully honest about the Republican campaign, he said. “Nowhere was the blatant disregard for facts, for reality and for a sense of proportion more evident than in the hypocrisy and hyperbole so cynically employed in order to try and depict Obama as some sort of latter day Haman who seeks to undermine Israel, if not to destroy the Jewish people completely,” he wrote. “Many millions of dollars were wasted in a futile effort to wrest away a few percentage points of Jewish voters away from the Democrats and into the Republican camp.” The result? Almost 70 percent of Jewish support for Obama. Read more: http://www.salon.com/2012/11/08/obama_wins_netanyahu_loses/ Ooh! Erm! Th-that was more that four paragraphs! Yeah, by one line: Now quit complaining.

Cooler heads prevailing never hurt that part of the world (or any other part, for that matter).

7. the Beiberman alliance was depending on a Romney Win
|
Romney/Ryan was surprisingly hostile to Palestinians, and advocated open warfare against Syria and Iran.
Beiberman was hoping, praying for war with Syria and iran and looking forward to abandoning even the pretense of peace with the Palestinians, in other words. Taken to the logical conclusion, Beiberman, though their support of Romney/Ryan, were hoping to embroil Israel in several regional wars that could expand in scope to something only slightly less than a third world war. This would have cost thousands of American and Israeli lives, to say nothing of the probable hundreds of thousands that would be killed on "the other side." Beiberman, in other words, was actively gunning for massive bloodshed in the region, and was willing to sacrifice untold numbers of Israelis to achieve it, and take down Americans with them. These are men elected by the people of Israel. And stand a good chance at re-election. This isn't an imposed junta. These are the guys that the Israelis want running the show, it seems. Guess we'll see how well that works out, come January. |

8. Locking - not Latest Breaking News

This is analysis of the implications in Israel of Obama winning, not news. It would be better posted in another forum (perhaps the Israel/Palestine forum).
