Israeli leader in bind after Obama victory

Source: Associated Press

JERUSALEM (AP) -- President Barack Obama's re-election has left Israel's prime minister in a bind.

Benjamin Netanyahu repeatedly has clashed with Obama and was widely seen as backing Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the American election. Yet in the coming months, Netanyahu will need American support more than ever as the Palestinians seek upgraded recognition at the U.N. and the world grapples with the Iranian nuclear program.

"It seems like it is not such a good morning for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," Israeli Cabinet minister Eli Yishai told reporters early Wednesday as news of Obama's victory emerged.

The concern reflected the widespread perception in Israel that poor personal chemistry between the two leaders could affect the broader relationship between their governments, particularly if Netanyahu is re-elected in upcoming parliamentary elections. The Israeli leader is the front-runner in the Jan. 22 race, according to opinion polls.

8. Barak? Really?

Barak is the most uncompromising defender of the Occupation and settlement expansion in the whole cabinet. He split the Labor Party, the party that CREATED Israel, just to keep the defense minister's job he appears to believe is his by divine right.

Barak as pm would be a nightmare.

The only chance there is for any change is for the whole pro-death right-wing coalition government that currently runs Israel to be decisively voted out at the next election. The hawks and the haters and the settler-enablers have nothing to offer Israel anymore.

11. From the +972 blog:

As America celebrated the re-election of Barack Obama, it was business as usual in Israeli-controlled Area C of the West Bank. At least two Palestinian homes were demolished today. The residents’ ‘crime?’ They didn’t have building permits, which are issued by Israel and are next to impossible for Palestinians to obtain.
snip
As of October 25, Israel had destroyed 138 Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem and the West Bank in 2012 alone, according to the United Nations’ Displacement Working Group. Up to 690 Palestinians were displaced due to the demolitions; more than half of them are children. In 2011, that number reached 1,094.

3. That's why Bibi called for elections

to be held in February - and he will lose big.

Israelis are so SICK of his Likudnik war-beating stance and wants to be left alone.

6. Then how is he still ahead in the polls?

The Israelis need to get rid of this asshole and be ready to move on to a more peaceful world.

24. Romney was ahead in US polls; perhaps they're using the same pollsters.

Romney did say the two of them were good friends, using the same people. Let's hope that's the situation. I pray Israel does not re-elect this hack.

21. It should especially chap Bibi's ass that

the Jewish vote went for Obama by a whopping sixty-plus percent. So he can't even argue that Obama's not doing the will of Jews in America.

This fucking sack of fascist shit was working hard to get Americans killed so he could prove his ballsack is bigger than Khamenei. Fuck him, and fuck the scumbags that keep electing his sort.

7. So true, scootaloo. He was trying to get Americans killed for his anti-peace, bad neighbor attitude

Yes there are problems around Israel's safety, and most certainly Israel needs to be protected....but not protected at OUR expense for THEIR war-mongering trouble-making stances on things. The victim state has become the bully state, and that WHOLE problem needs to be normalized. Netanyahu is the salt in Israel's wounds. Nothing can heal or turn out well for Israel AND their neighbors with him in there.

12. From my reading he get along with most othe Israeli officials. Peres, Barack, the brass of the IDF.

Beni Ashkenazi the former COS of the IDF was trying to cool the war with Iran talk. So the ex-Mossad chief. Rational people.

Its only Bibi and the Likud folks that are the problem

I thought Bibi had a "chemistry" issue.

"poor personal chemistry" means racist.

19. Screw the entire Likud party

Why are we still giving this country aid? They are horrible on human rights.

They constantly want to play let's you (the US) and them (Iran, Iraq, whoever) fight. Fight your own wars with you own money, not ours.

20. Declare Nuttyahoo persona non grata and throw him out.

Interfering in US elections should NOT be tolerated. And cut Israel's aid off. Spend that money on Americans.

Bibi may want to think about that.
