South Florida voters waiting for hours in line

Source: Miami Herald

By David Smiley - dsmiley@MiamiHerald.com

Voters hoping to beat an Election Day rush hour have been greeted by long lines, and in some cases aggressive campaigners, confused poll workers and parking shortages. The Miami Herald will update the news throughout the day.

LONG LINES LASTING, MIAMI-DADE, 11:45 a.m.

Any hopes that Tuesday’s long voting lines might fade in time for a lunchtime rush are waning at many precincts around Miami-Dade County, where voters continue to wait for hours to cast ballots.

25. it would appear that you are quite wrong

http://www.change.org/petitions/the-citizens-of-florida-move-to-impeach-governor-rick-scott?utm_campaign=action_box&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition

The Constitution of Florida provides for impeachment and removal from office for officials who have committed misdemeanors or worse crimes.

The citizens of Florida urgently call for the Impeachment of Florida Governor Rick Scott for his blatant voter suppression activity during the 2012 elections.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has done his best to prevent Democrats from voting in the 2012 Presidential Election. First, Scott and his Republican legislature undertook a purge of Florida’s voting lists that were so biased against minorities (who tend to vote Democratic) that the state was sued by the Department of Justice for violating the National Voter Registration Act. The purge was so overly aggressive that there are now reports of multiple military personnel being disenfranchised by the State of Florida for the 2012 election. In addition, Scott and his Republican co-conspirators in the legislature dramatically cut back on early voting hours in Florida.

26. The suggestion was to RECALL Scott not impeach him

The Florida constitution has no provision for a recall by citizens. An impeachment which is the only remedy until re-election time, requires that the state legislature pass articles of impeachment and try him. Given that both houses of the Florida legislature are controlled by Tea Party Republicans, that is highly improbable.

As citizens we can give the legislature reams of pages of signatures calling for impeachment. It won't happen. We would spend our time more productively to work towards electing more Democrats to the Florida state government - a Democratic governor and more Democratic state legislators. At the same time we can try to get someone to run against Marco Rubio and get his Tea Party ass out of the Senate!

28. Recall and impeachment are completely different political processes

The message to which you originally replied with the specifics of impeachment had asked about a recall. Impeachment is NOT a recall. A recall is NOT impeachment. The two require different procedures and should not be confused. Even if the end result of both processes is removal from office they are not the same.

Recall is a citizen originated process. Impeachment must be performed by legislative means. As I explained, in Florida the Republican controlled legislature will never impeach Rick Scott. There is no way under Florida law for citizens to begin a process to recall or remove Scott from office.

In politics, process counts. If you confabulate recall and impeachment you will never get anything done.

12. We need Federal Standards for Federal elections. NOW!

a friend in New Smyrna said there were waits up to 2 hours in lines three days ago.People were patient, and the turnout is in Obama's favor, but still crazy for the system to be that dysfunctional.

side note; I've never had to wait more than 20-30 minutes in any Blue state I've voted in (total of 5).

14. I saw the Florida ballot in a newstory on TV. It is complicated and huge!

In addition to the candidates, it has 11 amendments. One of the amendments is 640 words long and takes up more than half the page. If you're not prepared in advance it is going to take quite a while to figure it out in the voting booth. I think making the ballot complicated and shortening the early voting days was organized vote suppression.

20. All the amendments are from the legislature

and their wing-nut cronies. The standard procedure is to vote no on all of them. In my dem run town in North Fla there were some long lines for early voting on the last two days but everyone I have talked to today has had a 10 minute wait tops. Lots of people voted early including me on the first monday when I waited about 30 minutes. Florida has had these problems for 12 years not since 2000 and they are not going away until we can elect a sane legislature and governor.

17. I am in Broward county & they use paper ballots & one scanner at my polling place, convenient yes,BUT

in the first half hour the only scanner there went down numerous times. They were telling the people they could leave their ballots with them and they would scan them later. I find this unacceptable truly. If atm's all over the world can track every penny of everybody night or day....WHY ARE WE HAVING A PROBLEM VOTING IN A FEDERAL ELECTION????? Homeland Security and FBI this is a major concern regarding our country's future. Get out there and do YOUR jobs! PLEASE!

22. I like Naomi Wolf's suggestion for voter receipts

We get them when we make a bank deposit or pay a bill. Why not for voting. She suggested a numbered slip and a web site where you could check your number and make sure your vote was registered correctly. Is that not a simple but brilliant idea?
