Christie: Hug from Bruce made me weep

MONDAY NOVEMBER 5, 2012, 6:01 PM
BY MELISSA HAYES

...................

Christie and his family chatted with Springsteen at Radio City Friday night, where the musician was participating in NBC’s telethon to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

“We hugged,” Christie said as a crowd of volunteers in Monmouth County cheered at the sound of Springsteen’s name Monday afternoon “Yeah, we hugged and he told me it’s official – we’re friends.”

Christie got to speak to Springsteen again Monday. The Boss happened to be flying on Air Force One with President Obama, getting in some last minute campaigning, when Christie was giving Obama an update on the recovery efforts in New Jersey

“I told the President today actually that the hug was great and that when we got home there was a lot of weeping because of the hug,” Christie said. “And the President said, “Why?” I said, “Well to be honest I was the one weeping, everyone else was fine.”

order to see Springsteen and other celebs, too.

Who TF cares? I was at the pre-Inaug concert in DC 2009 with O, Springsteen and the rest and it was fantastic, but I would have come out in the cold with the other hundreds of thousands if O was the only one on the ticket.

60. Isn't That Kind Of

the point of having popular celebs appear on the campaign? Springsteen gets people there and then they hear the message? No one's going to argue that any politician is going to pull like Springsteen. I went to a Weld rally in MA some time back with the sole purpose of seeing Clinton and Ted Kennedy. The place was packed with thousands. They weren't there to see Weld, they were there to see the Pres. That's what campaigning FOR someone is about. You're trying to reach the most people possible.

It would have meant a lot for me - just to be able to talk 2 minutes with him, or to be in the same room as him, even though I might would have needed a translator.. To be able to get a hug for him - a musician I have listen to many, many years - wow... And who also have been a person who had options of many things - some I agree with (most of them) some I might not disagree 100 percent with - just 80 percent... But in all a great man.

I think Governor Christi was a lucky man, able to talk, and even getting a hug from Bruce Springteen...

Because he might be the beginning of the return of the reasonable Republicans.
The ones who think and are willing to deal with Democrats to find a balance in policy where no one gets everything they want but everyone gets something.

That's really the only way a Democracy can work.

Having reasonable Republicans to deal with is much better than the obstinate, constipated assholes it's filled with now.

A man/woman can always hope.. Even though I will settle for him being a indeended... He at least, even after telling a lot of bad things about President Obama - was honest and worked WITH the President, for helping his State when a horrible storm hit it... That is something I suspect many other leading republicans would never do..

Thank you for the hug - sometimes even a grown man need a hug

but OBama's asking "why" ? was funny because a lot of people have same reaction to him as Christie did to Springsteen.

i'm thinking of that pic of the little girl wearing some shirt that says something about how she is too young to vote but she can help/volunteer at some huge rally where Obama is going by and he gives her a hug and she starts crying.

30. The Boss is from NJ

I think the fact that both are from NJ and the Boss is trying to help mixed with the enormous stress that the Gov is under I don't find it odd that he cried. My guess is that if the meeting were under normal circumstances there wouldnt have been tears. That's just my guess.

I'm no fan of the NJ Gov, but I think when people who normally act like asses find themselves in the middle of a disaster that makes then stop acting like an ass, maybe we ought to encourage the non-ass behavior.

Maybe that was the point where he could finally let some of the pain and stress of this horrible time go.

He has shown that he cares more for the people he's sworn to care for than politics at this time. He's not behaving like the usual heartless Republicans do no matter what.

Down the road, who knows. But for now I do feel some respect for this man.

43. Gin

Gin

Sometimes even a grown man, even a governor need to cry - if a great musician hugged him.. And Bruce Springsteen are not like any OTHER artist out there... I know, if I was ever to talk to that man, I'm not sure if I would be able to bottle up my feelings...

Or it can be that the last couple of days, have taken his toll on Christie - it is hard to be on the top, when your state is being washed into the sea... Anyway - I think Christie care for his state - and he might get little overboard there... As we humans often do, when the pressure sometimes comes to show after a while.

It might be "pathetic", but at least it is a honest feeling for the governor - and I think it might show that he is a human after all.. Not all republicans is robots who have no feeling other than anger... Most of them might be -but even in a coal mine you can sometimes find a sparking diamond..

I am 50, and when I was in my late teens, I used to go listen to a band every week that played ony Springsteen songs. We even loved the substitutes. His music is so working man, and his early music was haunting and sad, in a way. It was soulful.

We are all in this together. We rise together, we fall together. I think the Obama, Christie, Springfield relationship truly brings that thought to the forefront in the face of the Sandy tragedy in ways we did not expect to see visualized so sharply.

discussion board who post RW crap in the "Fight Club" (the politics section of the forum, officially
the Underground, btw.)

It was hilarious in a sad, sad way how they were shocked!--shocked, I tell you!--when Bruce came out for Kerry in '04. Many of us were like, "Have you ever listened to the words of his songs? How can you be the least bit surprised he's a Democrat??!!"

The RW mindset makes for a whole hell of a lot of cluelessness.

He's a traitor to the Teabagger core of the Republican Party. I wonder if he's finally getting "it" - the climate change denial in his Party, the need for community and social programs when disaster strikes. Maybe he just doesn't care anymore if he pisses the Republican base off...most of these anti-socialists aren't going to be working to rebuild NJ anyways.

reinforcement sparingly. Did you really tell him you're officially friends now? Way too soon, Boss.

Give a few words of recognition for his working with Obama. But, no hugs, yet.

He'd have been so excited he'd want more. He would have said more supportive things about the president. You could have shot him a nice email.

Take it show. Make him actually support some bipartisan legislation, or speak admiringly of teachers. Then you give him the phone call. Hint that you'd love to have him attend the fundraiser for unions you're thinking of having at your home.

Just think of what you could have made him do!

62. Stop. Making me. Like this guy.

Because he could go back to Rethug business-as-usual someday, and then I'll be pissed.

73. I don't think he can be "turned blue"

but I also do not think there is nothing wrong with somebody that has different positions, even ones that I completely and profoundly disagree with, as long as they are not purely and stupidly and inflexibly ideological about them. Christie is a smart man, and a refreshing presence in our politics, even if most of the times he drives mad. But he has earned my respect a couple of times before the recent events, mainly with his nomination and strong support of a muslim for the NJ supreme court. And I agree, he IS "for real", which cannot be said about many politicians.
