Ryan 'Packs' Hurricane Relief Donations In During Wisconsin Photo-Op

Source: Buzzfeed.com

The order was given by a campaign staffer about 20 minutes before PaulRyan entered the GOP victory office here. Two dozen campaign staffers and volunteers pulled boxes from under six tables laden canned food and dry goods to be shipped to New Jersey for storm relief. Just across the tables were an equal number of reporters, videographers and photographers.

Ryan came under fire earlier this month after posing at an Ohio homeless shelter for an event in which he was washing dishes, long after the kitchen had closed.

It was the second of Paul Ryan's photo ops in his home state today where the campaign made a show of helping storm victims however they could. At the first stop in La Crosse, the vice presidential nominee thanked supporters for coming, shaking hands with some standing in front of an American flag, where minutes before, aides arranged boxes of Cheerios and cans of corn in perfect order.

In Hudson, the packing was proceeding too quickly, and the supporters wearing red "Team Wisconsin" t-shirts were given the order to slow down and then to stop to be sure there were still goods to be packed when Ryan entered.

One by one the boxes were filled and loaded into a waiting U-Haul, and then they stopped to wait for the candidate.

<snip>

As Ryan walked back through the office to the motorcade volunteers finished packing the supplies, which are being driven to a Red Cross facility in New Jersey.

As supporters walked out the door they were handed a flier about the GOP's election night party.

TYPICAL.

1. I think we can assume a President Ryan would be in no danger of responding to a crisis 'too quickly'

4. The one thing I like about this article is this quote -

"Go home, and if you can, donate to the Red Cross," Ryan said outside, standing on a metal chair next to the truck. He noted that victory centers across the state and the country are accepting donations of non-perishables.

At least he understands how relief effort works. Why in the world would you pack up a U-haul with vegetables in Wisconsin to ship to NJ? Seriously? Peas are like .88 a can. Let Del Monte send one of their semi trucks and take their write-off. "Go home and donate to red cross" is really the best answer.

I wonder if he realizes that with this VP nod he has stepped into bizarro land.

5. So, this is how they would spend our money?

Rent a truck to eat up all that gas to haul canned goods to an area that doesn't have electricity to run the can openers? Money would arrive sooner, food would be purchased more cheaply (wholesale or below) and help the area where it is being used.

These guys are truly stoopid.

27. Right. The Red Cross needs $$$$ not canned fruit!

The Red Cross and other aid organizations like FEMA have long said that donations of food, clothing and other small in-kind items force them to divert crucial resources away from relief efforts and toward sorting and cleaning donations.

9. Ryan in WI = Ryan trying to keep his seat - not be VP

Just my take. Ryan has a slight clue that they are in trouble. The more I see him in WI the more I think he is stealth campaigning to retain his seat. You know, just in case.

12. Update:

Sources at the relief agency have come forth with new information. It seems as though the packages the Ryan was seen putting together had actually already been packed. They had to unpack them after the Ryan campaign showed up unannounced so that he could repack them.

DEAR MR. ROMNEY AND MR. RYAN:

WOULD YOU PLEASE ORGANIZE A FUCKING BLOOD DRIVE ALREADY?

OH, AND STOP DIVERTING THE EFFORTS OF THE RED CROSS TO SATISFYING YOUR PATHOLOGICAL NEED FOR ATTENTION!!!!

I cannot wait until we don't need to look at these two any more.

17. Media conveyor belt for propaganda: not "GOP victory office", but "GOP campaign office". Wakeup!

Wakeup media! Just because you are on the Intarwebz is no reason to be a slacker.

When you (media) report using the carefully chosen framing of the parties, you are using their language to accomplish their goals.

It's not a "victory office", unless you are on their side. It's a campaign office.

No such things as a county party (GOP) office, only "Victory" center/office/HQ/whatever. Been that way for years.

Yeah, but you don't have to buy into it. It's a campaign office. (Unless you think their Victory is a real thing)

I don't think you would call an anti-abortion scam office a "Pregnancy Assistance Center" just because they list it something like that in the phone books. I don't think you would call the Romney-Ryan wealth-transfer budget 'plan' a Deficit Reduction Plan just because they call it that.

People need to be much more cognizant of the language foisted on them by those who know the power of language.

It's a campaign office.

21. Creepy& Weird

Red Cross's mission never changes..they get aid , in whatever particular form needed, to he victims FAST. Romney/Ryan tried to borrow from Salvation Army's mission, also a good one, but done year round. Their Cheerios may not be good by the time they arrive. God help the East Coast of the USA. Good job FEMA and President Obama.

And they can use the hundreds of dollars needed to drive a truck to NJ and instead donate to the american red cross.
