CEO: PRESSURING WORKERS TO BACK ROMNEY IS LIKE TELLING KIDS TO ‘EAT YOUR SPINACH’

CEO: PRESSURING WORKERS TO BACK ROMNEY IS LIKE TELLING KIDS TO ‘EAT YOUR SPINACH’ |

Billionaire CEO David Siegel, who runs a timeshare empire, threatened to fire employees if President Obama is reelected in November, saying in an email, “the economy doesn’t currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration.” In explaining himself to the New York Times, Siegel compares his employees to children who need parental guidance and don’t know what’s good for them: “I really wanted them to know how I felt four more years under President Obama was going to affect them. It would be no different from telling your children: ‘Eat your spinach. It’s good for you.’ ”

Unknown how many are aware of these laws that Democrats passed to protect them. The bigger problem is the economic intimidation which has been going on for years. Workers have put up with labor infractions, longer hours, disrespect on the job and other harmful things in fear.

Even when employees know their boss is acting illegally, we still have laws on the books allowing people to be fired at will and without any or little or dishonest reasons given to stay at work. We have right-to-work state laws, discouraging unionization and penalizing those who do work in union jobs, the most blatant in Ohio which were defeated but are still causing harm in WI.

The devastation in so many communities caused by the Romney business model have people terrified of the unemployment line. The GOP fought everything Obama did to protect those whose jobs were gone and looking for work, losing their homes and healthcare.

There is a consistent pattern in the acts of GOP lawmakers across the country, especially in the House and Senate, to force workers to submit to unfair labor practices. There is a huge difference in policy. We must put these thugs out of office.

The assumption is that people who work for a living are too stupid to figure out how to vote.

This is really just a short step away from arguing that people who aren't wealthy shouldn't be allowed to vote at all.

And the fact that he says "the economy doesn't currently pose a threat" makes me think that the reason he is looking down his nose at Obama has more to do with the color of his skin than the state of the economy.

The ultimate goal is the return of ownership and control of productive enterprise to workers and the direction of investment for the good of society rather than the destructive speculative rackets, wars and finance parasitism that characterize present-day capitalism. However, working-class consciousness is rather limited as of now, and there is a long, long way to go before we get anywhere close to that goal.

I don't know how much yard signs and bumper stickers influence people, but they might have a slight effect on undecided people. At the very least, all these folks working for employers who are telling them basically you're going to be fired if Obama is reelected, surely aren't likely to put up a yard sign, or have a sticker on their car.

And imagine driving into a parking lot at work, with hundreds of Romney stickers, and NO Obama stickers, through intimidation.

Of course, there's nothing saying this sort of thing hasn't always happened, and that anyone who puts a sticker on their car might run afoul of someone with a different candidate.

They don't know how brave Americans will never dishonor all the brave men and women from Attucks to Stevens, Smith, Doherty and Woods, from Paul and Burns to Liuzzo and King*, from Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, to Normandy and Iwo, and beyond, the Minutemen, Doughboys, GI's, Rosie Riveters, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Americans one and all stand tall on their shoulders and cast that precious ballot anointed in their blood sweat and tears according to our conscience for we all know to cow to the BIANO bluff would mean slinking to a job the next day and every day of our lives, gut wrenching for we could no longer stand tall and bellow "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" and we would know what is meant by a coward dies a thousand deaths while the brave die but once.
