California cuts to affect students, poor, disabled

http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/articles/2011/12/14/california_cuts_to_affect_students_poor_disabled/

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday ordered $1 billion in midyear cuts to California's budget that will result in pain for students who rely on school buses to get to class, mothers who depend on child care subsidies to keep working and support programs for the developmentally disabled.

Brown, a Democrat, said that the state's revenues will fall about $2.2 billion below the $88.4 billion he and state lawmakers had hoped for when they passed the budget last summer.

The announcement was not surprising and could have been worse. The state's legislative analyst had predicted revenues would fall $3.7 billion below forecast.

Still, the automatic midyear reductions sparked outcry from advocates and invited lawsuits from school districts.

Just a hint for those looking for a job.
As a public employee in California, working with special needs students,
I have seen a growing increase in private agency workers in our schools.
Want a job?
Make ourself employable in the field for the very rich who need your services.

will be called "welfare queens", "lazy" and told to "get a job!" by a large segment of the population. Thanks Gov. Brown!

non-profit which provides after school tutoring/activities for low income families. We have 3 sites, provide services for 150 families and employ 12 people way below what they are worth. None of our employees have had any rise at all in 3 years. Our Executive Director has voluntarily cut his own salary 4 times so we could keep staff employed (he makes $50K/yr). The health insurance we provide is now a joke. Our budget has gone from $500,000 to less than $350,000 for the entire program. We cannot cut any more. We are bare bones now. This round of 'trigger' cuts will close our doors after 40 years of serving 3 communities.

why is it that we put such importance on defense but so little on children, education and the people working in these fields who, imo, do the MOST important of jobs?! You all work with less than bare bones and they expect you to do what now?

I will write, call, etc. even though I know it does very little. Hmm.... I am wondering if this is something that occupy would be willing to fight for? I would think so.

really?? I did vote - for Brown. Now look what he and his minions are up to. The alternative was Whitman but now I am wondering what happened to the Jerry of old. This goes beyond voting.
