Romney's 'binders full of women' causes social media phenomenonLast edited Wed Oct 17, 2012, 08:45 AM USA/ET - Edit history (2)
Source: rnn
Romney's comment instantly sparked another social media phenomenon. People across the "Twittersphere" tweeted in reaction to his wording. "Romney: women inequality and discrimination is a social problem with economic repercussions NOT the other way around," said @ailishamacharia. "So glad we have something to replace the Big Bird meme now that it's run its course," added @missuslovely. A Twitter account named "@RomneyBinders" surfaced within minutes of the debate, posting tweets based off of the comment as well as retweeting other #binder tweets. Facebook users also joined a "Binders Full of Women" page, which had 184,130 likes within three hours. Even a new Tumblr blog was based on "Romney's binders," displaying edited images inspired by the debate. And with early poll results showing Obama as the winner of Tuesday's debate and outspeaking Romney by about 3 minutes, @RomneyBinders tweeted that one thing is clear about the debate moderator: "Candy Crowley is absolutely being removed from Romney's Binders tonight." 1. Speaking as a woman....
|
for women, there is something vaguely, well maybe more than vaguely, offensive about the whole "searching for competent women" comment. He said "Well gosh (really? do people still say "gosh") Can't we find some women who are also qualified?" It just smacks of insincerity. Not sure I can stand to listen to the lying scum any longer.

13. You think that's bad? I heard him say "Golly gee," once.
|
My ears bled. I kept waiting for Goober and Barney Fife to pop up in the background somewhere. Sure, my hubby's twenty years older than I am and in his 70s, but he's managed to move with the times and even he's never uttered a "gosh" since we've been married. But, we're probably being catty (I love being catty). And I'm sure Romney didn't have to go searching for qualified women at meetings with womens' groups. Hasn't he ever heard of personnel management recruiting or calling the state employment agency? What a nimrod.

|
(seeing as how he only knows Republican women). Then his staff gave him blank stares until one said, "Uh, maybe we could ask some women's group for a list?" Then one of the younger guys had to Google "women's groups" to find someone they could ask.

9. Romney’s “Binders Full of Women?” Yet Another Lie
|
What actually happened was that in 2002 — prior to the election, not even knowing yet whether it would be a Republican or Democratic administration — a bipartisan group of women in Massachusetts formed MassGAP to address the problem of few women in senior leadership positions in state government. There were more than 40 organizations involved with the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus (also bipartisan) as the lead sponsor.
They did the research and put together the binder full of women qualified for all the different cabinet positions, agency heads, and authorities and commissions. They presented this binder to Governor Romney when he was elected. http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/41055_Romneys_Binders_Full_of_Women_Yet_Another_Lie |

"Why did the phrase resonate? Because it was tone deaf, condescending and out of touch with the actual economic issues that women are so bothered about. The phrase objectified and dehumanized women. It played right into the perception that so many women have feared about a Romney administration – that a president Romney would be sexist and set women back."

That says a whole lot about binder women. A classic statement and will be the meme
for the Romney campaign, an update from barefoot and working in the kitchen. Fuckable unemployed housewifes are so much easier to manipulate. Names only, no full character staring at you at arms length. No real power. Get their bosses coffee, shut up doing their jobs for minimum wage. Be nice to the clients, even the men who come on with sexual suggestions. Mad men. Don't vote for them. |

67. Would A Man Who Doesn't Support Women Let His Wife Pick Out Any Oven She Wants For Her Birthday?
|
http://www.theonion.com/articles/would-a-man-who-doesnt-support-women-let-his-wife,29966/
"....So to Mr. Obama and all the undecided Americans out there, let me now ask you this simple question: Would a man who doesn’t support women let his wife pick out any oven she wants for her birthday? Let me say it again: Would a man who’s supposedly out-of-touch with the needs of today’s women hand over his credit card to his wife for the day, say “here you go, honey,” and let her buy whatever oven her heart desires? With a new set of cutlery to boot? My opponent would no doubt say, “Yeah, right. A man like Mitt Romney would never let his wife go to Sears.com and pick out any oven she wants, especially when there’s nothing wrong with the one she already has.” Well, I hate to break it to you, Mr. President, but that’s exactly what I did. When Ann turned 63 this year, I gave her explicit permission to purchase any oven on the market. Green, brown, blue, brick, ceramic—it didn’t matter to me, so long as Ann was happy and ran her final choice by me first. Now does that sound like a policy from someone who doesn’t respect women? After all, the kitchen is her space. I call it “Ann’s part of the house.” Like millions of wives and mothers across America, she’s a strong, independent woman who deserves every opportunity to grow and thrive without being told what to do in the privacy of her own home. That’s why I let her decide everything about the kitchen: what color she wants to paint it, what food she wants to buy, what meals she wants to make. In fact, I make a point of never going in there if I can help it, especially if Ann is cooking or cleaning. I give her full rein over the whole kitchen."....more As usual, The Onion nails it. |
