Romney Is Attacked by His Fathers Longtime Aide
By MICHAEL BARBARO
A longtime aide to George W. Romney issued a harshly worded critique of Mitt Romney, accusing him of shifting political positions in erratic and startling ways and failing to live up to the distinguished record of his father, the former governor of Michigan.
Walter De Vries, who worked for the senior Mr. Romney throughout the 1960s, wrote that Mitt Romneys bid for the White House was a far cry from the kind of campaign and conduct, as a public servant, I saw during the seven years I worked in George Romneys campaigns and served him as governor.
While it seems that Mitt would say and do anything to close a deal or an election, he wrote, George Romneys strength as a politician and public officeholder was his ability and determination to develop and hold consistent policy positions over his life.
.................
Mr. De Vries continued, George would never have been seen with the likes of Sheldon Adelson or Donald Trump.

(5,811 posts)they used to write back in the day before 24 hour cable news and the Internet. So Romney is using the racebaiting, divisiveness, fear mongering of the conservative GOP of the sixties.

Former George Romney aide criticizes Mitt
By David Shepardson
Detroit News Washington Bureau
Washington A former aide to Michigan Gov. George Romney harshly criticized Romney's son, Mitt.
In an essay mailed to journalists, Walt De Vries who was a campaign strategist to the late George Romney says the younger Romney "would say and do anything to close a deal or an election. George Romney's constant mantra to those in and around his campaigns and his gubernatorial staff: 'As you campaign, so shall you govern.'"
The New York Times posted a copy of the memo on its website.
De Vries contrasted Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, to his father. "George Romney was a political risk-taker. He fought for a new Michigan constitution that was narrowly approved, overhauled the administrative structure of the executive branch in Michigan and battled repeatedly for an income tax."

(18 posts)I guess this means that Willard's daddy, George W, is spinning madly in his grave right now, gnashing his teeth for having begat such a mutant son, miscreant enough to be threatening America with even more tax cuts for himself and the Cock Brothers, even more unprovoked wars of aggression, and even more Justices Scalia. Poor ole daddy Romney is no doubt bemoaning how the virulent, high class, family genes he passed on in good faith got so hellishly mutated.
God only knows, George, God only knows.
For, not unlike the great Christian God of the Jews, the petty little Mormonic God of thy only begotten son works also in mysterious ways.. apparently.

(47 posts)Of every newspaper in the country. When a longtime aid to his own father diss's him like this it should be a warning to all republicans just what they are buying so to speak.

(1,290 posts)George Romney also ran/held office in the Pre-TPGOP era when you were able to be rational and compromise with others. This just underscores how deranged the current TPGOP is.

(9,113 posts)I am glad to see that articles like the one about Walter DeVries' jaundiced view of Mitt get printed somewhere in the corporate news media. All too often, such articles relevant to forming an accurate opinion about a political candidate's character get ignored, heavily edited, or back-paged by the jellyfish who purport to edit and report the news for the rest of us.
---
A word to any passing Republican lurkers reading this. Please note it's not just us "libs" who are less than impressed by Mitt's character and honesty. It is guys like David Stockman, also former Republican senators and Congressmen, and now somebody who worked for Mitt's dad and has probably met with and dealt with Mitt himself who are less than thrilled about the idea of Mitt Romney as President. It is also the guys and gals who performed the opposition research concerning Mitt for Republican candidates like John McCain and Newt Gingrich who are also less than tickled about Mitt.
I can see why good Republicans might be tempted to discredit anything those rascally Democrats might say. But do you all plan to ignore what guys who served YOUR party for many years say about Mitt, too?
Ignoring so-called "liberals" is one thing. Putting your hands over your ears and saying "la, la, la, I can't hear you!" when confronted with unpleasant and inconvenient facts is symptomatic of an inability to deal with the world as it is.
