Ambassador Stevens’ Father: Son’s Death Should Not Be A ‘Campaign Issue’

Source: TPM

Jan Stevens, the father of the late Ambassador Christopher Stevens killed in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012, said that his son's death should not be a political issue in the campaign, in an interview with Bloomberg published Sunday.

“It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue,” Stevens, 77, said. “The security matters are being adequately investigated,” Stevens said. “We don’t pretend to be experts in security. It has to be objectively examined. That’s where it belongs. It does not belong in the campaign arena.”

He continued:

“I’m not sure exactly what he’s been saying and not saying, but our position is it would be a real shame if this were politicized,” Stevens said, referring to Romney. “Our concern now is memorializing Chris and remembering his contribution to the country.”

1. Will this request be honored?

Neither the M$M or the republicans can leave this alone. They are looking for a foreign policy issue to attack Obama and to date have found nothing that works. This is one that is close to the election and fresh in Americans minds, will they be able to walk away or will they proceed and then try to walk back from it?

3. Obama should remind Romney of this. Pat Tillman story was worse.

Have people forgotten about what happens when investigations are conducted too quickly and the press notified too soon? Remember Pat Tillman? That entire tragedy was far more controversial than this. The GOP want to talk about coverups? They flat out lied to the American people about Pat Tilman.

24. They more than just lied about Tillman. It was a skyscraper of lies ... an edifice of artifice.

It was like they contracted it out to Oliver Stone and had the Lie Factory working overtime. Appalling.

33. Thanks.

I was rather (cough) self-satisfied in coming up with that alliterative phrase. Then I Googled it ... and find that it's a case of parallel inventiveness. It's the name of an album of MP3 music in the 'ambient genre' ... not my cupputea, but interesting in a dissonant way.

4. But the republicans have no shame I hope this makes them shut down their talking point .....

.... that "Obama's actions led to the attack on our embassy."

So far the mother of the ex-SEAL that was killed has told "them" to stop
w/ their crap and now the father of the slain ambassador has told them
to stop it too.

He almost makes Richard Nixon look human in comparison.

Most Republicans I simply disagree on policy. With Romney I have a personal distaste on top of that.

14. What bothers me is that, if I, sitting in my living room having as my entire

experience in foreign policy and security matters, read history books and watched news stories, almost immediately understood the sensitive security aspects of this matter, then how in the world could the Romney team make the mistake -- the huge national security blunder -- of discussing this as part of their campaign.

Might as well blurt out on national TV that we are going in to find Bin Laden day after tomorrow. That's about how big the Romney team's blunder is.

What an idiot on top of being a liar and a psychopath.

I don't think that Romney knows anything about history, at least not enough to be president of the US.

After Bush do we really want to elect an inept, say anything, insulting jerk with no personality?

It's taken Pres. Obama a while to re-establish better relations with the world.

Romney takes one trip and pisses off his hosts.

We are who we elect. Are we really ugly Americans?

He is understandably devastated so I give him a pass, but his son's death isn't a campaign issue. The red flags regarding security/safety of our Embassies is a campaign issue, as it should be.

16. So Why Did Ryan Vote To Cut Spending For Security For Our Embassy

Rather dishonest for Ryan to cut the spending then complain about the amount of security. Then this wasn't even the embassy but a consulate office. Now if you want to ask why intelligence failed to pick up on a pending terrorist attack you might have a point. But intelligence often fails to pick up on attacks like this. The Cole is one example as is the truck bombing of the marine barracks in Lebanon. While we need to redouble our intelligence efforts we need to also understand that this is not an exact science.

17. The problem in Libya should not have been made into a campaign issue

to the extent it has been. Thanks to Romney's politicizing this issue as he has, he has alerted certain people around the world to some of our most sensitive, classified activities and how we do them. Romney has shown and extreme inability to handle foreign policy and national security in the statements he has made about the attack on the CONSULATE (not embassy) in Benghazi.

Romney has proved himself UNQUALIFIED to be president with this one dangerous indiscretion.

Wikileaks is a child's toy truck compared to this goof on Romney's part.

19. Willard made the deaths a campaign issue

He came out that day about the deaths and he stepped on those dead bodies to tell this country to vote for him because he would never have allowed this. He started talking about what happened before anyone knew what really happened. He smirked through the whole thing.

Republicans voted to cut money from security.

It has been said that people asked for more security for the Embassy. Did not ask for more security for the consulate. The consulate had a CIA Rapid Response Team on site. We now know this because Issa told the world through his witch hunt in the House.

If these men would not have died then there really would have not been any story.

Care to comment??

31. Yes, I agree 100%. My point went more along lines of how

Both Obama & Romney have mentioned/played political 'footsies' about the Libya Embassy tragedy. Obama should just put changes in place and stay hush...he doesn't need to defend his Libyan embassy-security strategies, to beat Romney.

12. The father's wish should be honored. K&R

The Issa "Hearings" were not only shamelessly opportunistic, but ghoulish.

Issa has no sense of shame whatsoever. It is why my posts here at the DU consistently condemned the Issa Hearings.

I agree with Jan Stevens: its being investigated. The GOP rushed to judgement to make this an "election issue" in hurry before November.

Ambassador Stevens family is grieving and in pain. His father has pleaded that it stop. It should. K&R.

His mother also asked to respect his memory and not use him as a political football, in so many words.

They could be angry, but they are waiting for the facts to come out and Romney should respect that. As for national security, he should keep his mouth shut even if there hadn't been loss of life in this awful event.

I see they are now saying the area is about to explode. Cheney making calls again?
