Florida pastor Terry Jones denied entry to Canada, heads home

The Detroit News

Detroit Controversial Florida pastor Terry Jones was released from detention Thursday by Canadian authorities and is on his way home after being denied entry into Canada.

Jones and his co-pastor, Wayne Sapp, say they were detained by Canadian authorities on the Canada side of the Ambassador Bridge around 10 a.m. on their way to Toronto for a rally called Canadians United Against Terror. The event was planned for 6 p.m.

Jones said he and Sapp were frisked and their car and luggage were searched. They say they were asked by authorities whether they had a copy of the film "Innocence of Muslims" with them. The men said they did not have a copy of the controversial movie, which has sparked violent protests in the Middle East.

Nor did Jones, who arms himself with a handgun, have a weapon. The men said Canadian border officers told them they were denied entry because they had an arrest record from last year, when the pair refused to take out a peace bond to protest in front of a Dearborn mosque. Sapp said the arrests were supposedly to be stricken from their record.

7. Let's start a fund for him to fly to preach his brand of hatred in Saudi Arabia.

That would accomplish the same goal, but faster. Who knows, they might all convert! Then the wackjobs here would stop pushing wars between our country and theirs. And stop funding him without a big, bad foreign enemy to squawk about...

5. Where are all the fierce first amendment free speech "rights" absolutists?

Soon, they'll be along to denounce Canada for restricting the "free speech" rights of this loathesome slug. Terry Jones has been wronged for not being allowed to spread his brand of hate and slime in Canada. Thank God Canada has reasonable laws that prevent grotesque individuals like Terry Jones from dominating their national conversation with all the hate and lies that we have to endure here in America. American's can learn a lot from their northern neighbor in this regards, IMO.

They weren't allowed in because they had an arrest record.

The US has a similar policy with regards to denying entry to those with arrest records.

54. I'm always torn about guys like this. On the one hand, their rhetoric is inflammatory and can cause

physical harm and even death to others.

On the other, if we did effective silence their violent and hateful rhetoric, it has the side effect of making them look more reasonable and therefore more acceptable to more people, and therefore easier for them to get and hold on to power.

65. Since When did the US Constitution Apply to Canada?

The 1st Amendment of the US Constitution is for the US. Not for any other country.

Canada, in fact, has hate speech laws. So they could have legally prohibited him from entering their country based on vicious tripe he preaches here in the US.

Faux News was blocked for a long time, but they are available, at least in parts of the country, now. 12. Canada's only doing what USA does to other people in other countries.

Any mention of a criminal record, even just being arrested, will get people wanting to get into the USA under the visa waiver program barred from entry, and a visa will have to be applied for.

Now the tables are turned, Mr. Jones has been arrested in the past. So under a visa-free system he is denied entry. If he wants entry he will need to apply for a visa.

Seems fair since the UK banned him from entry in 2011.

You can not go on the air waves here like Faux News and spread venom. We do have free speech but not
when it spreads racism, violence etc.

I remember when Ann Coulter was invited to speak at a College in Ontario. Here is a link to that story.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ann-coulters-speech-in-ottawa-cancelled/article4352616/

She was sent packing!!! Thank goodness... Then she used every opportunity to put down the College and Canada.

30. Not the first time, either...

In 2008, the Westboro Baptist Church planned to picket a funeral in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Not the funeral of a veteran, but that of a murder victim. (I don't get it, either.) They were turned away at the border and the explanation given was that is was "for their own safety".

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2008/08/08/westboro-protest.html

It should be noted that the Public Safety Minister was Stockwell Day, himself an admitted creationist who believes that Jesus rode a dinosaur and that every word in the bible should be taken literally. Even he found the Westboro gang too disgusting and repulsive to be allowed into the country.

63. I've yet to hear a definition for hate speech

that is suitably limited that it could never be turned around and used on speech that is merely unpopular at the moment.

Is protesting in favor of reproductive rights "hate speech"? To some yes. Some people even consider it worth killing over so that would cover the potential incitement to violence that a few like to throw around.

Should we limit it because a few view it so unfavorably? I would say no.

66. If He Really Believes His Arrest is Ever Really Stricken from the Record He is Sadly Mistaken

It might be stricken from the databases that provide employers background checks and even the local databases where he was arrested. But I have no doubt those records never really get stricken from at least some of the databases maintained by our government organizations like the NSA, FBI, CIA, TSA, DHS, Customs, etc. Which is probably why the Canadians found the records. I'd be shocked if we didn't have some agreement to mutually share these types of records with each other.
