The Associated Press is apologizing for what it says was a failure to place an instantly classic picture of Mitt Romney in the proper context.

The photo showed a little girl gaping as Romney bent down in front of her. The AP's original caption said that he was posing for pictures with schoolchildren.

<snip>

On Wednesday, AP executive editor Kathleen Carroll issued a statement apologizing for the situation:

The original caption on the photo of Gov. Romney taken Monday at a Virginia school was literally correct -- it said the governor was posing for photos with schoolchildren. But it was too generic and missed the boat by not explaining exactly what was happening. The student with the surprised expression had just realized that the governor was going to crouch down in front of her for the group photo.

We amended the caption on Tuesday with that explanation, but by then many people had seen the photo and were confused by or angry about it. Those generic captions help us process a large number of photos on a busy campaign day, but some photos demand more explanation and we fell short of our own standards by not providing it in this case.

1. What was there to apologize for in the Kerry picture?

If I remember correctly, he was touring a factory of some kind, and wearing the appropriate safety gear, as required.

14. So, he should have refused to tour the facility that he was at?

They could not let him tour it dressed as he normally was.

13. For the same reason they apologized here

Kerry was not doing anything silly - nor was Romney. Both pictures made it seem that way.

Kerry was dressed as he had to be to tour that factory. The AP knew what would happen releasing the picture.

16. I guess I'm missing the silliness in the Kerry picture. I see someone wearing a protective suit

while touring a factory.

The Romney picture, on the other hand, is hilarious.

18. It was shown out of context on every RW site in 2004 and

the mocking was really severe.

Your reaction shows simply that you are a mature, grownup who sees a serious man taking a tour of a place doing cutting edge work.

7. "many people had seen the photo and were confused by or angry about it."

So what? It's a funny picture. It happened. It is not graphic or obscene and it is NEWS. Why should anyone be angry? Because it might make Mitt look bad? Please. Knickers twist much?

10. How did the executive editor know what that little girl was thinking???

It's one thing to make things up and add a new caption after the fact and try to reframe the photo to portray Romney in a more favorable light, but if the executive editor is THAT clairvoyant then maybe she should be working as a sideshow mind-reader.

17. I think they were right to apologize.

I think it would have been even better to have not published the photo in the first place. I wouldn't like it if that were a photo of President Obama. Or a photo of my child.

22. Yeah at best that's shoddy reporting

at worse it's a deliberate attempt to make a prominent candidate look bad on the eve of an election.

It's not like it takes more than a second to realize exactly how that photo would be received.
