Obama wins by landslide in 7-Eleven coffee cup survey

Source: Today.com

To figure out whether President Barack Obama will win re-election, don't bother consulting costly scientific polls. Just check out the self-serve coffee at your local 7-Eleven convenience store.

As it has done in every presidential election since 2000, the convenience store chain is selling red and blue to-go coffee cups marked with the names of the major party candidates, as well as regular, unmarked cups for undecided voter in its "7-Election."

So far Obama is ahead nationally by a wide 60-40 margin, although more scientific polls have the national race as virtually a dead heat. In the closely contested swing state of Ohio, where both candidates are campaigning heavily this week, the coffee cup poll favors the incumbent 57 to 43, with undecided coffee drinkers excluded.

Even though the poll bills itself as "unabashedly unofficial and unscientific," it has accurately predicted the winners since it began in 2000. Not only that, the results have hewed within 1 percentage point of the final popular vote. In 2008, Sen. John McCain got 46 percent in the 7-Election and 45.7 percent in the real election, while Obama got 52 percent of the coffee cups and 52.9 percent of the actual votes. In 2004, President George W. Bush beat Sen. John Kerry in the 7-Election 51-49, compared with 50.7 to 48.3 in the real polls.

9. I think its a fair and accurate methodology

7-11 is a window to the average medium income. My 7-11 put out 6 rows per candidate. Obama is down to 2, while Romney is down to 4. I'm still perplexed as to why anyone would consider voting for that douche..

11. No Obama cups left at my local 7-11

I live in a very conservative area and there are NO Obama cups left at the local 7-11. Tons of Romney cups though! I also don't see any Romney bumper stickers whereas I saw a ton of McCain/Palin bumper stickers the last Presidential election. Anecdotal? Sure, but I think possibly more accurate than polls. People often lie on polls for various reasons. Why bother "lying" about your preferences by buying a different cup?

And they printed Romney's name! Bias!

Actually, it's probably just an indicator that blue is a more favored color than red. But I bet the election results pretty much parallel this 'survey'.

I'm pointing out that your stereotype of right-wingers is in fact the same as the common right-wing stereotype of liberals:

"They have their frapucinno mocacino crapacino machines inside their fancy offices."

You know, like the latte-sipping elites with college degrees, etc. etc.

20. There were no winners in the 2000 race.

Democracy; lost ergo the American People lost, Bush was a loser then and he's still a loser.

So the article is misleading, the 7-Eleven coffee cup survey was wrong in 2000, Bush didn't win the popular vote and had the Republican dominated Supreme Court not violated the Constitution and stopped the counting of the votes in Florida, Gore would've won the electoral count as well.

Thanks for the thread, IDemo.

largely working people, people on a middle income or lower wage job.

Rich folks don't buy coffee at 7-11

I just hope the 7-011 drinkers all go to the polls and vote.

29. Somehow I doubt Texas is going Obama 58-42....

...which is what this coffee cup survey is claiming.

Looking at these results it seems like something has dramatically changed with the coffee buying public. Maybe Republicans now go to Dunkin or something.

Perhaps people are especially ashamed to show they support Romney? If that is true, I bet exit polling will significantly overestimate how well Obama did and lead to a replay of 2004.

31. Do you believe Obama is winning Texas 58-42?

That's what this survey claims. No serious person actually believes that, so we're left to look for other explanations.

I am just guessing that either Republicans don't get coffee from 7-11 as much anymore, or they are really ashamed of supporting Romney. And if we agree that perhaps they are indeed ashamed of backing Willard, which I think they should be, then they might also lie to exit pollsters leading to a bad situation similar to 2004.

33. Well actually the cup sales were fairly accurate before...

...as you point out they were in 2004.

What I am getting at here is that something changed - at least where this unscientific, yet previously fairly accurate poll, is concerned.

I can only guess that Republicans either don't drink 7-11 coffee as much these days, or there is some societal pressure this time around to either use the Obama cup or be ashamed of the Romney cup. My guess is it is the later and perhaps some percentage of people are ashamed of admitting they support Romney. And if they do that where coffee cups are concerned, then it is almost certain some will do this when replying to exist pollsters.

34. nothing changed, even in 2004 there were places which sold more Kerry cups where he had no chance

of winning, and same with Bush.

im guessing a lot of customers at these places are people who are driving through and don't always live in those areas.

but the numbers this year are similar to 2008 numbers and McCain/Palin people were not embarrassed by supporting him as i can see people being of Romney.

so what you say about Romney is true.i'm guessing there are a good number , many of them republican who don't like him so wouldn't go out of their way to get the cup which an OBama supporter would. even a non coffee drinking Obama supporter might get the cup just to have it.

so yes, we can't depend on this . but i would rather the numbers be what they are than what 2004 numbers were.
