Change in redistricting process on Ohio ballot

Source: Youngstown News

Ohio voters next month will decide whether the state should move forward with a proposal to change the process for redrawing its political districts.

Debate over Issue 2 has been contentious. It proposes a 12-member commission of state residents to re-draw Ohioís legislative and congressional maps every 10 years.

...snip...

The first nine members of the commission would be selected by lottery from 42 applicants placed into Republican, Democratic and unaffiliated pools by a panel of appeals-court judges. The first nine members selected would pick the other three.

I heard the Party Chair discuss this last night. If it passed, it would kick in immediately, and lines would be redrawn for the 2014 election.

1. We could wash the teabaggers out of the General Assembly right quick

There is a Constitutional problem with the federal representatives. The Constitution says that the legislature is to set Congressional district boundaries. A committee directed by a referendum may not meet a challenge in the Supreme Court.

We could get a new redistricting bill passed by a new governor in 2015, then we will be cool.

4. Issue 1

Did you vote yes or no on Issue 1 ?

The Cincinnati US Regional Chamber opposes it.

I can find no group that supports it.

5. Sounds interesting however I would seek to add a clause barring anyone who helps set the districts

from running for an elected position for 6 years and if they are currently serving in an elected position it bars them from seeking any elected office for a period of 6 years after their current term expires and that includes seeking re-election.
