Charlie Fuqua, Arkansas Legislative Candidate Endorses Death Penalty For Rebellious Children In Book

Charlie Fuqua, the Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives who called for expelling Muslims from the United States in his book, also wrote in support for instituting the death penalty for "rebellious children."

In "God's Law," Fuqua's 2012 book, the candidate wrote that while parents love their children, a process could be set up to allow for the institution of the death penalty for "rebellious children," according to the Arkansas Times. Fuqua, who is anti-abortion, points out that the course of action involved in sentencing a child to death is described in the Bible and would involve judicial approval. While it is unlikely that many parents would seek to have their children killed by the government, Fuqua wrote, such power would serve as a way to stop rebellious children.

According to the Arkansas Times, Fuqua wrote:

The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21:

November 6 General election candidates:

We'd need an Arkansas expert to let us know. McLean was elected unopposed in 2008 and 2010; I don't think a single person is running for re-election in the same number of district they now represent, so it looks like Altes may be irrelevant.

11. I think he did.

I saw a picture of him and an older woman who could be his wife. They were standing with three people in their twenties or thirties and a baby. They were in a church so it might have been his grandchild's christening. There was also a picture of him on the couch with a baby. The biography mentioned that he coaches a floor hockey team.

is the follow through.

If you have a child that is so rebellious that you must threaten them with death, then if they disobey again you must follow throuh.

of religious people.

I once listened to a couple of fundamentalists briefly discuss that they could not understand how anyone could be expected to behave if they didn't have the threat of punishment hanging over them. It was clear that they honestly did not think anyone could behave well just because it was the right thing to do.

And if that underlying belief informs your view of the world, then holding out the possibility of having parents send their children off to be executed would make sense.

There's a science fiction novel begging to be written from this.

I am against the death penalty for anyone for any crime, but why would you leave that part out? A 16 year old can be tried as an adult in the US too by the way, and it happens often. They especially would for rape.

More on the Convention on the Rights of the Child (which I guess did not apply to the 18 year old)

It has been claimed that opposition to the Convention stems primarily from political and religious conservatives."

The U.S. is right up there with Somalia(though Somalia has pledged to ratify it eventually, unlike the former). I am not so surprised, after reading the OP.

What if dad wants Sis to make some serious money by becoming a child prostitute or selling drugs to her friends at school? If she refuses, can he kill her? What if dad wants Sis to wipe his ass after he takes a shit? What if dad wants Sis to give him a blow job and she objects?

35. Mr Fuqua clearly doesn't understand Deuteronomy at all.

He is a lawyer (family law and personal injury as his main specialties), not a theologian.

If the guidelines for dealing with a rebellious child as outlined in Deuteronomy 21:18-21, then he needs to take some other items from Deuteronomy and apply them too:

1) Hungry people on your land, obtaining food? Deut. 23:24-35 says it's OK.
2) Taking a loan from one of your fellow countrymen? No interest can be charged - per Deut. 23:19-20
3) That poor worker you hired and who needs their wages? Pay up or it's a sin against the Lord, per Deut. 24:14-15
4) Find something belonging to someone else? Gotta return it per Deut. 22:1-4
5) Someone owes you money on the Sabbath Year? Forgive that debt, per Deut. 15:1-3
6) Find someone in need and you have the capability of loaning someone that money? Give that money, even if the 7th year is near, per Deut. 15:12-18

I could go on. Deuteronomy also goes on and cites things like not mixing seeds when planting (there goes genetically modified seeds), don't wear cotton and wool together in a garment, forbidding cross-dressing, eating only food that is considered "kosher", stoning those folk who "sleep around", oh and those pesky things called the Ten Commandments.

Reverend Jim Jones, David Koresh and the Branch Davidian religious sect and dozens more professed their beliefs and teachings so that someone with reason can look at them and say: "Are you serious"? The sad part is that some podunks believe this is a good way of handling things. I have never seen a party like the Republicans that brings out the lunacy of a persons belief. If being a liberal means you have to think and question things then I'll just be a hated liberal.
Let's bring back the Spanish Inquisition and start the Crusades all over again so we can whip people into sheer stupidity.

65. My definition of rebellion is acting to stop what is wrong and goes against life and humanity.

Oftentime a 'rebellious child' is one who has been disrepected, beaten or sexually abused by the elders in their family and seeking independence from the injustice that is crushing their humanity. IOW, it has a good cause.

Likewise the American Revolution, is presumed to have been fought for a just cause and for a reason. When it was over, the country would perfect itself by fostering equality. Thus, it would have no need for armed rebellion for justice. It is not the enemy of the people, but the engine to protect the people from their enemies, predatory corporations, bigots of all sorts, ignorance and misery.

The family values crowd of the GOP hold up the family as being more important that the child who rebells from being abused. They want all the laws that protected children from sexual exploitation by family members, being kept in ignorance and in bondage to authoritarian abuse, eliminated. In such cases, rebellion would be doing God's will, resisting the tyranny of a corrupt parent.

This guy is a sick authoritarian who wants to put this oppression on those who are less able to fend for themselves, and kill them if they resist. Sounds very much like a rapist mentality or a slave owner. But then, he supports slavery, too. I hope citizens of Arkansas will shun this benighted bastard.

A form of rebellion the GOP favors is that of 'a rebel without a cause,' often self-indulgent asses unwilling to confront the consequences of their own actions, threatening harm to take advantage of others. Teabaggers meet that definition.
