Canadian-Owned Firm Gives $1 Million to Romney Super-PAC, Raising Red Flags
Source: Mother Jones
A million-dollar donation by a foreign-owned corporation to a Republican super-PAC has raised legal concerns and opened up the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court decision to new criticism. Restore Our Future, the super-PAC supporting Republican Mitt Romney's run for president, received a $1 million donation in mid-August from reinsurance company OdysseyRe of Connecticut, a "wholly-owned subsidiary" of Canadian insurance and investment management giant Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited. -snip- Watsa and his company cashed in on the collapse of the US housing market by investing in complex financial instruments known as derivatives, according news accounts. Since the beginning of 2008, Fairfax Financial has spent $320,000 on lobbying in Washington, D.C., and its issues include how derivatives are regulated under the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010. -snip- Read more: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/10/canadian-foreign-donation-super-pac-restore-our-future

2. Of course, if a Democrat received such a donation,
|
the Republicans would be screeching like banshees. There'd be accusations of foreign control of a U.S. political party and dire predictions that the sovereignty of the mighty U.S. is all but toast.
But, when Republicans benefit, well, that's first amendment protected. |

3. Why is it that a foreign national is prohibited from making a personal

contribution to a campaign, yet foreign corporations can give as much as they like to a 'Super-PAC'?

4. I just thought of Alito shaking his head and mounting "no" when President Obama mentioned foreign
|
donations in his State of the Union address when he criticized the Citizens United ruling. I wonder how much more foreign money is pouring into rmoney's super pacs?
