Feds charge 91 healthcare providers with billing fraud

WASHINGTON A federal healthcare strike force has charged 91 doctors, nurses and other licensed medical professionals in a nationwide sweep in connection with fraudulently billing the government nearly $430 million. Those charged included a group in Los Angeles that ferried patients for ambulance rides that were never medically necessary.

According to federal law enforcement officials on Thursday, 16 people were charged in Los Angeles, including three doctors and a licensed physical therapist, in schemes that cost $53.8 million. The phony ambulance trips cost the government $49.2 million, and the four people arrested in that operation represent the largest takedown of alleged ambulance fraud since the special Medical Care Strike Force was activated five years ago.

In Chicago, two defendants were arrested. A dermatologist and psychologist were charged with falsely billing the government for millions of dollars for unneeded laser treatments and psychotherapy services.

Other cities where arrests were made or defendants surrendered after federal grand jury indictments were unsealed in the last 24 hours are Miami, Dallas, Houston, Brooklyn and Baton Rouge, La. The indictments alleged more than $230 million in home healthcare fraud, more than $100 million in community healthcare schemes, and the $49 million in ambulance transportation fraud in Los Angeles.

2. I know of the dermatologist from Chicago.

I heard something related to his financial records being seized, probably in connection with this. From what I heard, his clinic was ,among other things, offering people massages that were not medically related and then billing it as a medical expense.

3. Go one step further: seize their assets.

If I'm caught with a doobie in my glove compartment, the police can arrest me, take my car, take my home, and seize my checking and savings accounts. All before I go to trial; all because dobbies are illegal.

The last time I checked, defrauding the government was a crime.

11. You are most welcome!

My stepmother was an occupational therapist in convalescent hospitals and I use to help out in the summers, part of my duties was randomly making up numbers for the time of treatment to submit to the hospital management to bill Medicare. The problem wasn't so much that in a real way this was fraudulent, but rather that the billing system was inefficient and not designed to reflect the differential levels of treatment the mostly impoverished and alone patients were able of completing. The whole system needed to be reformed!

8. Excellent and I am sure they are working on more.

The Medicare system has been poorly managed for a very long time, but they are starting to get their act together.

Until they do, we can't demand Medicare for all. Once it is done, we can.

10. I recently had a patient ask me to bill the spouse's insurance as that deductible was met.

Of course this was a rightwinger also. I tried to explain "fraud" but they had a difficult time understanding it.

12. Yep, it's not just banks, rich, etc. -- this whole country seems built on people ripping others off.

It's darn disgusting at times. But then a lot of jobs are tied to greed I suppose.

We've built this mess, and now's the time to start cleaning it up.
