Romney: I’ll Cover Pre-Existing Conditions, Obama: No, You Won’t

Source: TPM

Challenged by President Obama during Wednesday’s debate in Denver over how he would find insurance for the sick after repealing the Affordable Care Act, Mitt Romney asserted that he had a plan for those with pre-existing conditions.

“Pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan,” he said. “Young people are able to stay on their family plan. That is already offered in the private marketplace. You do not need the government to mandate that.”
He charged Obama with turning to “an unelected board who will decide what kind of treatment you ought to have,” a reference to an independent panel of experts created by the ACA tasked with controlling overall Medicare costs, but not individual patients’ treatments.

The only problem: Romney has made that guaranteed issue claim before, only to repeatedly have his campaign clarify that his unnamed plan for health care reform would not allow people with pre-existing condition to obtain insurance. It would only allow them to maintain continuous insurance, for example if they lose their job, something that is already in the law but often prohibitively expensive with employer subsidies. As recently as last month Romney’s campaign confirmed his policy stance.

1. Romney was the glib, slick snake-oil huckster to night.

Lying through his teeth .. albeit very well.

8. This is what I am talking about

Romney has really caused himself a headache with his lies. He forgot his previous speeches. Also Romney will now have to justify his latest flip flop to the right. I give President Obama kudos for staying cool and letting Romney hang himself. It must have been so tempting to slap Romney around.

12. All those practice lies did him some good!

What happened to our President? He should have came back at him. He missed some opportunities!

13. Definitely

Romney has no chance in hell to make Obama supporters believe he can lead. The Republicans will follow a talking sloth if it ran...Romney was making a case for the right to keep him on the ticket...even they have been shitting on him in the press of late. That is what this debate was really about, maintaining support from his own party.

15. Didn't most of what he said violate what a lot of Republicans believe in?

The more I think about, the more I think this could turn off some Republicans or turn them towards Gary Johnson.

16. Not to worry sports fans...

all Romney had to do was to not step on his own d*@k. But even then he did. He admitted that he would not raise taxes on the top 1% of earners; that's a huge admission that he probably won't even remember saying tomorrow. The expectations were lowered and all he had to do was to look "presidential" and he did.
On the other hand, the President was a bit subdued and seemed halting at times, not the usual smoothly delivered addresses we've been accustomed to seeing from him. What we've done is project our ambitions on the President and when he fails to live up to our expectations we become disappointed and morose. Now think, despite how the Republican faithful actually feel about Romney, do you see them NOT supporting their candidate? That's the problem with the Dems and Progressives, they crumble at the first body blow and the first grey sky on the horizon.
Now seriously, has this debate changed your mind? Do you think it's changing the Republicans? In essence you're falling for style over substance;Romney is not a complete idiot. After his disastrous performances in the Republican debates, he was bound to improve. So now take a deep breath, chalk this up to experience and remember that Romney won't win this election based on one debate and the President won't lose it on one debate either.

17. The Target Audience wasn't to the Left or the Right

The target audience was to the moderate middle independents. Why do you think Rombot had to trot out Romney-care and throw the tea-party under the bus? Because he had to work on making the moderate indie voter believe his swill. That's why you saw an aggressive approach, Indie voters need to be persuaded to vote one way or the other.

Obama's approach was to let Romney be the aggressor, let him bluster his way through his over-rehearsed talking -points read well rehearsed lies which will be fact checked before the stage clears]. Meanwhile, Obama slowly shook his head, or visibly winced when Romney would puff out his chest in imagined victory.

Obama maintained a low-key, well paced, cadence with thoughtful pauses. Basically, he was presidential. That's his job, period. I was more disappointed in the after-debate coverage on MSNBC, except for Al Sharpton. Al, nailed it with his comment about Romney's points being from 19th century instead of the 21st century. Also, how there's tape of Romney saying something completely different than what he said during the debate.

The rest of the pundits on screen were wanting Obama to "go for the jugular". That wasn't what Obama needed to do tonight, he needed to allow Romney to feel victorious and than use Romney's own words to show how truly different these two men are.

18. I still can't believe Romney accused Obama of "trickle down."

The lies. The lies. The next debate will be town hall style, with undecided voters (i.e. idiots) asking questions. I can't imagine Romney's aggressive, lying style working for him there. We shall see. In the meantime, Biden better bring up abortion, immigration and the 47% (or in Ryan's case, 30%) at the VP debate--oh and what a bunch of lies the Romney campaign is running on.

19. If we already have it, why does the mandate matter?

The mandate for those things should have zero impact if they are already available.

"That is already offered in the private marketplace. You do not need the government to mandate that.”

Yes Mitt, you do need to mandate that because it is not offered to the average person.
