Border Patrol agent shot dead, another wounded in Arizona

(Reuters) - One U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot dead and another wounded while on patrol early on Tuesday in Naco, Arizona, the Border Patrol said.

The wounded agent was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening wounds following the shooting at 1:50 a.m. local time, the Border Patrol said in a statement.

Officials withheld the name of the dead agent pending notification of family.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office were investigating, the Border Patrol said.

2. This happened in the same area where another agent was killed in December 2010

These two were with a third agent, who was not harmed.

4. patrolling on horseback? Might be a good way to get into backcountry but

you're a sitting duck on a horse and it's hard to control horse and a gun if you need it at same time.

Just end the drug wars and that will be the end of these incidents.

14. The Border Patrol agents were working on foot when they were attacked.

Nicholas Ivie was one of three agents working on foot about 2 a.m. when someone opened fire on them, killing Ivie and wounding another agent. The third agent was not injured.

Even if they had been on horseback at the time, I don't think they deserved to be shot.

And not to disparage border patrol, but there is a lot of corruption with these drug wars. Could these two have been involved in some way besides just being on patrol?

8. If this is not disparaging the Border Patrol,

it's hard to imagine what that would look like. Surely you can conjure up some criticism for the actual killers.

Two died in a late night collision with a railroad and one committed suicide.
