Pat Boone endorses Todd Akin
Source: KSDK
St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Mid-century pop singer and actor Pat Boone is voicing his support for Rep. Todd Akin for U.S. Senate. In a brief statement released Friday morning, Boone says he's "strongly supportive" of Akin and that he'll "represent the true values of Missouri families." Though not from Missouri, Boone routinely performs in Branson and across the state. Pat Boone received the Conservative Political Action Conference lifetime achievement award in 2011. 69. I grew up in the 50's and everyone of my friends thought he was a puke.
|
Little goody two shoes with his white bucks was regarded with derision. He was the original nerd, candy ass kissing puke. We all laughed when his daughter came out with the award winning song in which the lyrics apparently endorsed premarital sex in which she sang "how can it be bad when it feels so good."

97. I saw Debbie on Pat Robertson's show around the time "You Light up My Life" was such a hit
|
She explained to the Rev. Pat that the song was about the Holy Spirit, which she was filled with, and the words "this can't be wrong when it seems so right" actually referred to the fact that when one has the Spirit within, even the wrong will be made right...or nothing is wrong 'cause it's right because the Spirit is indwelling...or...oh, hell, I can't really remember, but her point was, her hit tune was NOT about sex!! And the someone she was waiting to come along and sing her his song was--the Holy Spirit! I understand Debbie is somewhat estranged from her Dad these days, having to do with his politics, but don't quote me on that. Back in Pat's heyday, my devoted Christian mom let me, then about 15, buy a pair of white bucks 'cause that's what good clean-living Pat Boone wore. He was not viewed with derision among my Baptist buddies. Whatever...I did love my white bucks!

106. Debbie Boones "You Light Up My Life" was nothing more than a poor cover version of the original song
|
The song came from the movie of the same title back in 1977 and was performed brilliantly by an unknown artist (Kasey Cisyk). It was not a religious song at all. Debbie Boone hijacked it. She is stiil making money off it today with her "Lifestyle Lift" commercials. Hearing Boone sing it always makes me sick. If you want to hear the "real" song:

|
Didn't realize Didi Conn had not actually sung it in the movie, but I do recall, walking out of the theater when it was over, thinking "Gosh, that was one dumb movie." Song was nice, though. Sorry Kasey didn't get the credit due her, and that she left us so soon. She was an amazing talent! Also did not know Joe Brooks wrote it. Debbie made it sound like it was her "tribute to the Holy Spirit" which would lead one to believe she wrote it. A couple of the Ten Commandments musta slipped her mind--the one about not stealing and the one about not bearing false witness. Any respect I ever had for her has now plummeted to zero.

Debbie Boone is one big hypocrite. That song was "supposed" to be about Debbie's so called love of Jesus but lookey here now! It's all about getting "work" done on your sagging skin!

33. Pat's a tool, but I don't hold his whitewashing of the hits against him
|
Remember, back then radio was very segregated. Black artists were pretty much heard only on black-oriented stations. Plus, hit rock n roll songs were much more regional then, and often found on smaller indie labels. Due to these factors, it was quite common for multiple versions of the same song to coexist at the same time. This was also done across formats. One particular label had both R&B and country divisions, and the raunchy R&B hit would also typically be recorded and released on the country side.
Pat Boone watering down the 50s hits was just the way things were back then. It could be argued that he actually served as a gateway to black music for suburban kids and their over-controlling parents. And Fats Domino was very thankful for the royalty payments that made him much wealthier than if he just did it on his own. Scary thought, but Pat Boone was a big factor in the early growth of rock n roll. Nonetheless, he's still a douchebag. I wonder if, while singing Tutti Fruitti, he ever realized that the original Little Richard lyrics had very graphic descriptions of gay anal sex, prior to some major rewrites and editing prior to its single release. |

And I won't argue with any of your comments. In fact I am ashamed to admit that my very first record purchase was a Pat Boone 45 cover of Little Richard. Long Tall Sally, I believe. But after hearing Little Richard himself, I never bought another Pat Boone record and I soon came to detest Boone after learning about who was really doing those songs the right way and how they were being ignored.

And the stuff he writes there is off-the-deep-end-right-wing drivel.

Of course, it's even funnier when limpballs mentions "family values." what's the marriage count for limpballs. It must be the "gay marriage agenda" that's destroyed his marriages, right?
these guys are just creepy. If I wanted to live in their misogynist, intolerant, robber baron dark ages, I'd vote for them. where the plebes, especially women, know their place. |

|
Pat Boone advanced his career in the 50's by doing insipid cover versions of R&B songs, for which the original artists and songwriters received no compensation. It should come as no surprise that his take on economic justice has not progressed at all since that time, given Akin's unwavering opposition to equal pay for equal work.

Mister Teabag started out by singing rock & roll songs written by black musicians. Because Pat is whiter than white it was "safe" to sell those records to white kids.
Now he sings at the Moon River Theater in Branson and writes columns for WorldNutDaily. |
