Adelson: Investigation Into His Casinos By Justice Department Is Top Reason For Backing Romney

Source: The Huffington Post

In August, The New York Times wondered aloud what the rest of the political world wanted to know: Does Sheldon Adelson's effort to put Mitt Romney in the White House have anything to do with the federal criminal investigation into his company's business practices?

The Times editorial page mused that "since Mr. Adelson's financial future is riding on the outcome of these federal investigations, it is legitimate to ask whether he has motivation for supporting the Republican ticket so lavishly, beyond his sharp disagreement with the Obama administration's position on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process."

In a wide-ranging, two-hour interview with Politico's Mike Allen published Monday, Adelson himself answered the question.

The top reason Adelson gave for backing Romney and opposing President Barack Obama is "self defense," as Allen put it, referencing the probe into Las Vegas Sands Corp. "Adelson said a second Obama term would bring government 'vilification of people that were against him.' He thinks he would be at the top of that list and contends that he already has been targeted for his political activity," Allen wrote.

Odd, I thought Israel was his biggest issue. In fact, he has said so in the past. Ah, well, I guess one's own hide comes before all else.

1. Adelson's expenditures look like an attempt at bribery.

Romney should refuse them and tell Adelson to mind his own business until the accusations against Adelson have been cleared.

The accusations against Adelson are believable. That does not meant they are true. And he has the same right to the assumption of innocence as anyone else. But Romney would be wise to distance himself from Adelson. Any politician would be.

How much of the money supporting Republicans in this campaign season may come from questionable sources? Potentially a lot of it. Romney should watch this. It's playing with fire.

16. ofcourse he should

and ofcourse he is playing with fire. He has no morals. he has to gamble. Rmoney is a desperate man. He is like a rat backed into a corner. He is a loose cannon with a short temper. He will come unglued and he will display and remarkable level on insolence but he will never admit his evil. Not even once. No matter how obvious it is. That is the teahadist playbook. Its classic Herman Goebbels.

Rmoney cant disown Adelson, Adelson owns Rmoney.

18. "How much of the money supporting Republicans in this campaign season

may come from questionable sources?"

I'm willing to bet a good chunk of it might be coming from foreign governments who would like to curb US influence in the world. What better way to do that than getting someone like rmoney and ryan into the white house and getting more rethugs in Congress?
I wouldn't even be surprised if some of that money came from al qaeda or similar groups. Thanks for making it almost impossible to figure out where this money is coming from, rethuglicans.

3. Randi Rhodes has been speculating about this for quite some time. Once Robme becomes

president, he'll appoint a Justice Department sympathetic to Adelson's plight.

Why does he feel the need to buy his own favorable Justice Department?

8. Senile Paranoia & Greed

If he was going to vilify and prosecute people that "were against him", he had a whole lot of Bankster fraud prosecutions that could have gone forward, not to mention War Crimes prosecutions.

Not a one of them happened. Get a grip, old man.

I was talking with my buddy this morning about Sheldon and we realized that with a fortune of $36B (sorry, but nobody should be allowed to have that much money - don't care if it's D's or R's) spending $100M for him is like me giving you $20 bucks!

31. Rachel covered this a few months back

There was some bribery of Chinese officials in Macau to help Adelson's casino there during the recession, if I remember it correctly.
She brought up Adelson' s "investment" in Romney that could save him billions by having a friendly Justice Department..

undercut that harmed the American jobs and solar factories?

In the very month those factories were due to open their doors, someone in china with big money backed that price undercut (2010?). China never said who fronted that money. IMO looked like a planned political attack and hurt many American jobs and Federal funds.

42. I wondered about Obama's sudden "white slavery'

interest and whether this could be a shot across the bows of Adelson's shady business practices? tHe Koch's are legally vulnerable too but this donor seems more politically vulnerable as an emblem of Romney's backers. The moral issue is a gut winner here more than casinos.
