SHANGHAI — Foxconn Technology, a major supplier to some of the world’s electronics giants, including Apple, said it had closed one of its large Chinese plants Monday after the police were called in to break up a fight among factory employees.

A spokesman said some people had been hurt and detained by the police after the disturbance escalated into a riot involving more than 1,000 workers late Sunday.

The company said the incident was confined to an employee dormitory and “no production facilities or equipment have been affected.” It said the cause of the disturbance was still under investigation.

One Foxconn employee reached by telephone Monday afternoon, however, said the incident began when workers started brawling with security guards.

1. If the masses in China rose up

gawd knows there's enough of them, things would change drastically. For everyone in the world. Literally.

6. Right. Nothing good ever happens to large groups of people without first revolting.

Sadly.

It would be a very bad massacre.

I'd rather die fighting for humane working conditions for all than living a longer time being ground to grist in their mill.

But hey, that's me.

18. I've said the same thing here several months ago.

When I was in Shenyang, which is north of this facility in Liaoning Province, I saw glimmers of outrage boiling in a cost of living situation. CCTV would air little things like this, but call it something else. Food and housing costs are going up and people there (at least in Shenyang and Dalian) are visibly ticked off. But you are correct. If there was an uprising in several cities at one time, it would give legitimacy to other people who are reserved about protesting. It is boiling. And I can honestly say that. Its just a question of when. I believe if protests were to transpire, it would be in places outside of Beijing which is where the major police powers are located--and very mobile. Smaller cities, more difficult for police to squelch quickly. I truly hope there is a day before my time is up, that I can witness a rise of the people who are truly awsome. The government is what sucks from the corruption that is all over. But the struggle for democracy in China would be a long fight. Question is, do the people have the will to see it through?

28. Tiennamen wasn't a mass uprising.

The most generous estimates put 500,000 people in Tiennamen at the peak of the protests, and there were virtually NO supporting protests in the rest of the country. 500,000 people was roughly one half of one percent of China's population at that time.

The Chinese government would be helpless in the face of an actual mass uprising. Could you imagine 300 million people in the streets? There aren't enough bullets in the country to put down a revolt of that scale.

Foxconn has lots of factories - they make tons of stuff for lots of other tech companies, such as HP, Cisco and Google.

I can't find anything specifically saying this factory makes iPhones.

Americans might have had to wait for the new, very important i-phones.

Note that there is no mention in the lead on number of people hurt.

If you had to live with 20,00 other people in a giant dormitory aka romney bain plant with barbed wire and armed guard towers, with only 10 bathrooms in that dormitory, you'd riot too.

7. Sounds like the one Mitt was thinking of buying.

An offhand trip to China, just a couple of Cadillacs for Ann, NASCAR owners, $10,000 dollar bets. Just a man of the people...NOT. This was on Sunday...even more delight for the corporate raiders...7 days a week for 3 hots and a bunk bed.

15. These paragraphs are interesting:

Labor unrest in Taiyuan, in northern China’s Shanxi province, comes as strikes and other worker protests appear to be increasing in frequency in China this year compared to last year, said Geoffrey Crothall, spokesman for the China Labor Bulletin, a nonprofit advocacy group in Hong Kong seeking collective bargaining and other protections for workers in mainland China.

Many of the protests this year appear to be related to the country’s economic slowdown, as employees demand the payment of overdue wages from financially struggling companies, or insist on compensation when money-losing factories in coastal provinces are closed and moved to lower-cost cities in the interior.

But the level of labor unrest in China this year has not yet matched 2010, when a surge in inflation sparked a wave of worker demands for higher pay, Mr. Crothall said.

It looks like workers in China are really beginning to get fed up with low pay and horrible working conditions. I have to agree with a previous comment that a major revolt would turn into a massacre. I think the question then would be: Would First World governments and consumers be shocked enough to demand some changes?

19. "Foxconn, which is part of Hon Hai Group of Taiwan" -Any way to find names of this investment group?

Would we see similar names as those on groups like Carlyle Group (Bush Family baby) and Bain Capitol?

It would be interesting to be able to find out more about the group backing the group.

(So many companies within companies within companies these days, 'eh?)

It's always hide the names and hide the money where big money investment is involved.

27. Now that we have outsourced critical technology manufacturing

to a region where workers are getting fed up with being exploited and might soon revolt, we face the dire threat of inconvenience. What could possibly be more horrifying than Americans having to face delays in the delivery of their cell phones and tablets? Oh the humanity!

I'm not sure who I feel for more; the exploited Chinese workers living in labor prisons or the unfortunate Americans forced to face back-order delays.

Oh, wait. Yes I do know who I feel for more.

for stolen product. Things got physical between some guards and some workers.
