Riots Break Out at Foxconn Factory in China: Report

Reports early Monday from China suggest that a mass disturbance or riots may have broken out at a Foxconn factory in the Chinese city of Taiyuan.

It is still unclear what exactly happened, but posts on China’s popular twitter-like service, Weibo, from users in the area show photographs and video of large numbers of police in and around the factory – many in riot gear – blocking off throngs of people.

Other photos show debris strewn around the Foxconn compound and in one case, an overturned guard tower.

According to popular tech blog engadget, the disturbance kicked off after Foxconn security guards allegedly hit a worker around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Censors in China have reportedly already started deleting pictures from the scene.

10. If you look at the pic it's a standard guard shack, the kind most any factory has at the gate.

aka a Tuff Shed with a window and a door, and a desk and chair and possibly a minifridge and portable air conditioning unit inside.

12. And barbed wire fences

Don't forget about that.

The "official" reason to have all these security measures is to "keep people out", because it's such a swell place to work....

2. This is not the first time

that Foxconn has had problems with its Taiyuan facility, which is reportedly responsible for the fabrication of the back plate of the immensely popular new Apple iPhone 5.

19. Small delay, may need to train new employees, only takes a week or so.

It's all rote so they can be replaced relatively easily.

4. According to Mitt, it's people trying to break in so they can work for free.

When China Labor finally blows up, the resulting noise will be heard on the freakin' MOON.

6. Reminds of Mitt's waxing eloquent on Chinese manufacturing conditions...got past the censors?

Can you imagine what it would be like to read his insulting diatribe in China about their "cozy" little dormitories and the barbed wire? I really hadn't thought of it like from the Chinese point of view, but how insulting. That even makes him more of an ass, if that's possible. Now, he's insulted just about every continent?

OTOH, maybe it's a Bain trick to drive down the value so they can buy it cheaper...you know, add another level to the bunk beds. I wouldn't put them past it.

8. China will make a terrific Capitalist Nation!

The people there have absolutely no regard for their fellow citizens. They will exploit the hell out of the workers as long as their bribery funds hold out!

15. No pesky labor laws and a militaristic totalitarian regime. It's perfect.

This is why Nixon went to China.

13. Uh-oh, does this mean rich people won't be richer?

That's the worst thing to happen in this world.

Bravo to the Foxconn workers. I hope they come out of this with something more than death.

18. They likely want to get paid better for their work.

Apple of course chose Foxconn because they're not getting paid much for their work, and for every employee that gets fired another dozen are ready in the ranks to take their job.

Good old capitalism.
