World Health Organisation says has found new SARS-like virus Sun Sep 23, 2012 6:13pm EDT By Kate Kelland LONDON (Reuters) - A new virus belonging to the same family as the SARS virus that killed 800 people in 2002 has been identified in Britain in a man who had recently been in Saudi Arabia, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Sunday. The United Nations health body, which issued a statement through its "global alert and response" system, said tests on the patient, a 49-year-old Qatari man, confirmed the presence of a new, or novel, coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which includes the common cold and SARS. "Given that this is a novel coronavirus, WHO is currently in the process of obtaining further information to determine the public health implications," the statement said. Sorry...I couldn't resist
It's the nature of things...there's the NIH labs where one has gotten loose and has killed several people with no end in sight because there is no antiviral drug or antibiotic to kill it...then of course, there's the Hantavirus that has potentially infected over 100,000 people visiting national parks and staying in the cabins (I always thought that would be so cool!) |

4. New 'Sars-like' coronavirus identified by UK officials
|
A new respiratory illness similar to the Sars virus that spread globally in 2003 and killed hundreds of people has been identified in a man who is being treated in Britain.
The 49-year-old man, who was transferred to a London hospital by air ambulance from Qatar, is the second person confirmed with the coronavirus. The first case was a patient in Saudi Arabia who has since died. Officials are still determining what threat the new virus may pose http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19698335 |
